News today was not very good about the 22 year old right hander. Yovani Gallardo suffered a torn ACL after colliding with Cub Center fieder Reed Johnson. Yovani returned to the mound after the collision, and gave up two runs. But ultimatley he seemed fine on the mound. Later, while the Brewers went down to Houston, Gallardo went up to Milwaukee to visit the team doctor.
The Team doctor examined him and called it a tear in the lower ligament. He also said that pitching after he had torn it did it absolutley no further harm "Once its torn, its torn".
The Brewers recalled Dave Bush from Triple-A and put Yovani on the 15 Day DL. There is a chance Yovani may not need surgery, but that is a slight chance at best. If he does under go surgery, he will likely be out for the remainder of the season, and most likely the beginning portion of next year. This injury is coming a month after an Arthriscopic surgery on the same leg. The injury to Yovani is devestating to the Brewers, as he had a sub 2 ERA in the 3 starts.
The signing of Jeff weaver was almost exaclty intended to help in this situation. As I have heard from a lot of rumor mills, the Brewers could be in the running for a potential trade for Roy Oswalt. The validity of this statement hasnt been confirmed and is only a rumor. But right now it would make the most sense out, as the Brewers get slim on starting pitching.
EXTRA: Derrick Turnbow was sent to the minors this morning after a pathetic beginning to the season. He had no comment.
