Straight A Shooter

Wanna get better grades? Many readers of this blog are still in school. This post is especially for you (and anyone else looking to do better academically).

The book called Getting Straight A's by Gordon Green helped me do just that. Here's the link on Amazon.com for those interested in checking it out: http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Straight-Gordon-Green-Jr/dp/0818405716

Anyway, the techniques discussed in the book are mostly common sense in nature, simple to follow, and simple to implement. Notice I didn't use the word "easy." To me, one of the most challenging concepts to teach my students is the difference between "simple" and "easy." In golf, putting is the "simplest" stroke, but it's not "easy" to master." Very much the same with doing well in school.

I just had a discussion today with my classes about the whole idea of academic success not being an accident. My own experience has demonstrated to me that it has more to do with effort than ability.

Some of the ideas I learned from Getting Straight A's include (and their are 10 outlined in the book):

1. Sitting in the front row

2.Taking copious notes in PENCIL during class and REWRITING them in PEN at home that same night

3. Get to know your teachers/professors early on and let them know what YOUR expectations are and find out what THEIR'S are as well.

4. Complete ALL assignments prior to class.

Those are the four I focus on with my students. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to improve their grades.

Ill try them come next year and write them down now, good blog as always

G.O.A.T., it is, but remember, "All can, some will, most won't."

Gator, I do pretty well in the classroom and the number one thing (in my mind) that you need to do if you want to be successful academically is extremely simple: pay attention in class.

G.O.A.T., and that's why I know you're one of the "some" I referred to above : )

Hello Everyone,

This is Dr. Green, author of Getting Straight A's. The study methods really do work, if you follow them conscientiously. If you want to see the methods applied to sports analogies, since you are sports fans, check out my book How to Get Straight A's in School and Have Fun at the Same Time.

Thanks again to RUGator for helping students do better in school!

Rewriting my notes used to really help me.

My biggest gain was when I buckled own and quit accepting making simple mistakes (math mistakes, missing something obvious in the question or something I already knew). this came after a test where I hit the high score out of 300+, but would have scored perfect if I had not made the stupid mistakes (making the final a mute point). I figured being in the technical field I shouldn't accept basic mistakes. My grades shot up after that.
