David Beckham shows up

Beckham celebrates after putting the ball in the back of the net

It finally happened! David Beckham has finally produced for the LA Galaxy in a game that will silence the critics for at least a few days.

Beckham scored twice, one off his legendary free kicks, and another of a long range effort from outside the penalty area to secure a 2-2 draw for the Galaxy against Real Salt Lake.

In front of a record setting crowd in Utah, Beckham shot two lasers into the back of the net and singlehandedly kept the Galaxy in the game.

An example of a signature David Beckham free kick

"It was a good game in the end," Beckham said. "I think that we started off terrible the first 20 minutes. We didn't get close enough to them as a team. We looked scared of them. And then a couple of tackles started going in, and we livened up. We got ourselves back into the game."

Real scored two goals in the first 20 minutes, from Edgar Fabian Espindola and Kenny Duechar, but LA started to mesh after that and are sitting in second place, 1 point behind FC Dallas, in the MLS Western Confrence. Things are looking good for Ruud Gullit and David Beckhams men as the season commences.

This wouldve been more impressive if it werent against RSL, but still, its probably enough to quiet his doubters. for now.

I know that a lot of you know that I hate Beckham, but I'm going to say it anyway. This hasn't proved anything to me. It was Real Salt Lake, who if not at home, is awful. And even if they are at home, they aren't very good. Two nice goals, but heck, it isn't a big deal. I'll give him props when he starts doing something against Houston, DC, and the other big dogs. And yes, Houston is still a big dog.

Good blog and I'm delighted to have read it. I could never hate Beck. He's given way too much to the game of Futball. We're talking about the same David Beckham who broke out onto the Soccer Pitch at the age of 14 and never looked back. Beck is every bit as good as his famous legend makes him out to be and probably even better. There are literally tens of thousands of outstanding moments that Beck has shared with us and certainly they're not all good. But whenever I think of Beck, I choose to focus on the defining moments of his illustrious career. Like the one on opening day of The Premier League season in 1996 against Wimbledon. I'm talking about the goal he scored from just behind the MID FIELD LINE on Neil Sullivan!!! Can you name one other player that has accomplished that feat? No, I can't either. RSL must be pretty bad to have given up a Double to a Mid Fielder.........or possibly.......David Beckham is just that good?

I had doubts about Beck because of his injuries. Obviously his wheels aren't as stirdy as they used to be but "MY BAD". He's still with us and still one of the best in the business. I have no doubt that he can and will run with the Big Dogs. If Becxham has anything at all left to prove......I'd sure as hell like to know what it would be.

I'm sorry GoldenThread, but Beckham has never been one of the best in the business. There are tons better, and it has always been that way. I don't know why you're sucking up because he hasn't done anything for us. And anyway, you're a Dynamo fan, you should hate his guts.

Well, it's a start.

HaHa Keeper. No, I'm not a Dynamo fan per say. I love The MLS as a whole but my heart remains in San Jose. I fully comprehend your meaning and I am only giving an alternate point of view. Beckham is not Brazilian, he does have his flaws. But what isn't he doing for us? Please feel free to explain any negative impact he's brought to the US. If you look at the big picture Beckham is still new here. Somehow the man ends up in the US. A nation that has no real futball infrastructure to speak of. All Beckham has to do is play for this many million dollars. Win or lose, he comes back next season to the same division in the same league and play for this many million dollars. MLS isn't even a challenge for him. In the years down the road the MLS will need to become more closely affiliated with USL and develope a relegation system. so is everyone blind to what he's doing? Then I'll tell you. He's a frontrunner, a pioneer. He's giving the US a jump start to the future. He isn't supposed to be scoring unless it's on a free kick but yet he already has two regular goals with more sure to come. He's doing his job well He's great on defense. His free kicks go exactly where he intends for them to go. What seems to be the sad truth here really isn't all that sad. Beckham is here to be a part of the pavement to progress. Let us not look a gift horse in the mouth. We'll all be able to look back fifty years from now and realize the historical significance of what he is doing for us today. Robert Craft has proven at least for now that a sucsessfull team can be built without a designated player and I'm sure that FIFA is thrilled to death about it. But I must remind you that where there is no Cup, there is no glory. It's all about Silverware and yes, The MLS Cup will be another of David's defining moments.

Two goals does not take away from his horrible career here so far I am pretty sure he has under 5 goals in the MLS and his team, which was supposed to get better with the addition of Beckham to the team, has plyed poorly in his stay there so far
