Best Baseball Players By Numbers

Is Cal Ripken the best baseball player ever to wear No. 8? (We say yes.) What about No. 51? Who would you chose between Ichiro or Randy Johnson? How about No.34? Do you take Kirby Puckett or David Ortiz? Here are our picks for the best baseball players to wear each number: 00-22, 23-46, 47-99.

Now it's your turn. Give us your thoughts.

No way should Kirk Gibson be ahead of Ryne Sandberg for #23. Gibson was never even an all-star. And putting K-Rod ahead of Johan Santana (CYA winner) at #57 is almost as bad.

Tom Glavine should be the guy for #47. 300 wins. Two Cy Youngs and 95 World Series MVP. Fourth-winningest lefty of all time.

K-Rod over Santana? That is just wrong. Santana may end up as a Top 10 all time pitcher...K-Rod, great closer, but will not be making that list any time soon.

K-Rod over Santana is a mistake. As is Scott Shields over Joba Chamberlain (not even mentioned).

Ryne Sandberg is a Hall of Famer. Kirk Gibson is not.

K-Rod couldn't even carry Johan Santana's shoes.

Ridiculous that you'd put Derek Jeter in front of Jimmie Foxx.

You should have #84 in there for JT Snow... wearing it in honour of his father, Jack Snow (WR)

nomar, worthy of consideration? not even close

I'm a Yankee fan, and I still find this outrageous. Derek Jeter over Jimmie Foxx? Let me put something into perspective... Jimmine Foxx, 534 HR, 1922 RBI, 1571 runs, .325 AVG .428 OBP .609 SLG. Derek Jeter, 195 HR, 949 RBI, 1394 runs, .317 AVG, .388 OBP, .461 SLG. It's amazing what 4 world series wins gets ya. Did I mention that Foxx won the MVP award 3 times, to Jeter's 0. Jeter's carear isn't done, but the only number here that he has a chance in passing is runs, and his average will probably only go down as he declines.

YOGI YOGI YOGI!!!
Ripken? okay but not ahead of yogi

Character counts. Banks over Rose any day.

Mariano Rivera is a better #42 than Jackie. Robinson was a great player but Rivera is the greatest reliever/closer ever.

The #1 goes to Ozzie Smith, Oh played in Japan with a very limited no. of teams, even more limited talented pitching. You put him in the MLB and his no.'s fall fast. Ryan Sandberg over Kirk Gibson any day.

Report Offensive Comment

Juan Encarnacion (43) is 'worthy' of consideration but not Jimmy Edmonds (15) or Scott Rolen (27)? I mean, COME ON. They have FIFTEEN Golden Gloves between them. Juan was lucky if he could use his.

Report Offensive Comment

Gibson over Sandberg for #23 is absurd, ridiculous, and wrong. Sandberg is a hall-of-famer, and Gibson didn't even get enough votes to stay on the ballot after the very FIRST ONE!!!

8=Cal
33= Eddie
NO MORE QUESTIONS!!!

Report Offensive Comment

Jeter over Jimmie Foxx? Chipper Jones has almost surpassed all of Andre Dawson's records already and he is still playing for #10. One of the greatest switch hitters of all time, and still has lots of years ahead of him. Tom Glavine should be the #47 as well.
