Broncos second round pick Eddie Royal

Eddie Royal is the second round draft pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2008 NFL Draft. He is a wide reciever from Virginia Tech, who will probably play in the slot for the Broncos, behind Brandon Stokley and learning from him throughtout the season.

Royal is 5-10 and 180 lbs, a good size for a slot receiever, and had 33 rec in 2007 for the Hokies for 496 yards (15 ypc), with 4 touchdowns, and can also run the ball well, probably as an option.

He is incredibly quick, elusive, and good at finding holes between coverage in the slot. Royal also has good hands and great body control to get ready for a catch. His most suprising aspect is his strength for his size, a fine tackle breaker, and he is a good run blocker as well. (he benched 390lbs)

Royal will learn the ropes from legendary slot reciever Brandon Stokley

He had a big game against Virginia with 6 catches for 147 yards and a TD, leadinh VT to victory in that game in his senior year derby. Royal will be compared with Texas WR Limas Sweed and California WR DeSean Jackson, leaving Broncos fans with the question: Who is this guy and why did we draft him?

Well, one incredible quality Royal has is punt and kickoff returning, someting Denver needs I believe, as he became the ACC's all time leader in punt return yards. He seems like the perfect player to replace Stokley in the slot, but they may move him on the outside to replace Rod Smith according to some reports, eventhough they are completely different players.

All i have to say is that I never doubt Mike Shanahan with his draft choices. This kid has heart and is right in the head, unlike previous draft choices, and can suprise us like Brandon Marshall has.

Take a look at what he has to offer:

....another Bronco WR who wont get enough touches from Cutler.

Cassidy, that doesn't even make sense--his name isn't Javon. Nobody is looking for another receiver to get 102 catches a season--we have Marshall for that. They are looking for a game changer--a speedster--not someone to move the chains consistently....This was a great move by Shanahan. He'll make an immediate impact as a returner and could surprise people halfway through the season as a WR.

Thanks Jeevs, I've been looking for some links. Good idea for a blog, too.

One other thing, if he was that good this season, why in the hell did no one ever talk about this guy? Such a crime.

yes it is

Good blog Jeevs, don't wait so long in between blogs. I look foward to reading more from you. don't let the detractors sway you from blogging.

Well the unlucky part about Royal's late college career (and a possible reason why you didn't hear much about him) was that there was just inconsistency at QB--Sean Glennon. Royal just didn't have a Ryan, or a Tebow, or Henne, or Brohm etc etc throwing to him. He is a lot better than what his stats show--but he does have a few stats that hint at how great he COULD be. As Jeevs said he lead ALL-TIME in punt return yards for the ACC. Another stat--which I find amazing--is that he set a Virginia Tech school record for career all purpose yards. The fact he did that isn't as amazing as the fact he is a WR and kick returner--not a running back and returner who could see the ball 20-30 times a game. That statistic just blows me away.
--I live close enough to catch a good amount of VT games a year. If you have watched a few VT games then you know Royal. You also have heard "Ed-die, Ed-die" chanted a few times too. This was a WR I wanted for our team, and am Happy we got him. His best games came against the top teams, he can be a big time play-maker.
