Is that really a picture of Gavin Floyd? The guy drafted in the 1st round (4th pick overall) by the Phillies in 2001 who was such a major bust that they gave him away for peanuts? Has CCC lost his mind?

For a minute I thought this was going to be a blog about how prophetic I am, lol. Last month I did a TD commemorating Mark Buehrle's no-no last year on April 18th and asked who the most likely White Sox pitcher to toss a no hitter this year is. I took Floyd and, of course, got my rear end handed to me.

Throw down

Tonight Gavin gave up his first hit with one out in the 9th inning. I know. You're probably thinking "I'm sure glad that Floyd fella gave up a hit because I don't want to read CCC gloating about some silly prediction". Here's the thing. This wasn't a fluke that I almost hit on. This is becoming a trend for the kid who suddenly seems to have learned how pitch up to his lofty expectations of a few years ago. 

In 6 starts this year, Floyd has now pitched 39.2 innings and allowed all of 20 hits. All but one deemed "quality starts" (6+ innings pitched with 3 or fewer earned runs allowed)

It gets better.

In three of those six starts, he didn't allow a hit before the 6th inning and allowed no more than 2 hits.

Wait, it gets even better.

In one of them he didn't allow a hit until 1 out in the 8th and tonight not until 1 out in the 9th. Not since Nolan Ryan was around have I seen a pitcher flirt with a no-no so often in little over a months time. Keep your eye on this guy, he's starting to look like he is capable of throwing a no hitter any time he takes the mound.

Will it last? I don't know. But I had to give a hat tip to Gavin Floyd for his recent performances.
