It's May 7th here in my beautiful home state of Massachusetts. It's a nice day today and I should be outside, but I already played basketball and I'm too lazy to get up again. Well, this is my first blog here at MLB Fanz and it's going to be about the teams and players who are hot, as well as those who are not. Props to dudeman for the idea.
Hot:
The Boston Red Sox. My home team, the Red Sox, are tied for first in the American League and currently are riding high above the second place Devil Rays in the American League East. They are on the longest winning streak in the entire league, five games. The Red Sox have been greatly helped by their younger players, such as Jacoby Ellsbury, Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester, Jed Lowrie, and to a lesser extent, Brandon Moss. Despite David Ortiz's rocky start and a Mike Lowell injury, the Red Sox have managed to win. Tonight they face the Tigers in a pitching match up between Clay Buchholz (2-2) and Armando Galarraga (2-1)
The Saint Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals have won an impressive eight of their last ten. They are on a three game winning streak and are sitting atop the National League Central. Braden Looper has had an impressive season with five wins and just one loss and a team leading .385 batting average. Isringhausen somehow has eleven saves despite an ERA over six. Albert Pujols has been having another successful season. He is batting .348, he has a .503 on base percentage, and a .591 slugging percentage. Pujols and Ankiel lead the team with six homeruns. The Cardinals are off to an impressive start.
Chase Utley. Utley has been on a tear all season long. His .351 batting average is fifth in the majors, the thirteen homeruns he has totaled lead the majors, and his twenty-six runs batted in is sixth in the National League and ninth overall. Utley has led the Phillies into a tie for first place in the East along with the surprising Florida Marlins. In just the past week he has hit three homeruns and compiled five RBI's. Utley is having a monster season and could wind up with an MVP award, but it is way too early for that.
Not:
The Detroit Tigers. Detroit has been shaky all season. Everyone knows that they entered the season with very high expectations and disappointed right off the bat. They didn't hit or pitch well and Justin Verlander has been un-Verlander-ish. Then, all of a sudden, they picked it up. They started hitting, and hitting a lot, but now they are on a losing streak again. A five game losing streak that is, and they are sitting in the center of the American League Central which only has one team above .500.
The Milwaukee Brewers. Sorry dyhard, but your Brewers are on a four game losing streak. They also have only three wins in their last seven games. Last night the Brew-Crew had only two hits and no runs. Tonights game against the Marlins features two winless pitchers, Bush for the Brewers, and Badenhop for the Marlins. In the last week the Brewers have scored twenty runs and only one non-pitcher has hit over .300.
Andruw Jones. You all have heard about Jones, I'm sure. He signed a big, fat contract with the Dodgers and it has not paid off at all. He is batting just over .160 and he only has one homrun and a measley four RBIs. The ten time Gold Glover has been struggling, and that's an understatement. I don't like talking about negatives so I'm just going to stop right now with Jones.
