I love my Detroit teams. Ever since I was a small child I can remember watching them and feeling that sense of pride when they won. This was at a time when the Pistons, Red Wings, Lions were terrible and the Tigers were an up and down team, the 70’s if you must know. No matter how bad they were I was always rooting for them. As a child it is always the local teams you cheer for the most but sometimes another team gets attention for the smallest reason.
The New York Jets became my other football team all because of one Christmas morning when I got pajamas that had Joe Namaths #12 on them. Although not a real fan nowadays, I always have a little part of me that still wants to see the Jets do well. I started liking the Baltimore Orioles something about those orange jerseys and that cartoonish bird just sucked me in. Even today if the Tigers are playing the Orioles I know it is a win/win situation because one of my teams is going to win.
I was fortunate that as I grew older my beloved Detroit teams started winning (except the Lions). I’ve been able to see The Pistons, Wings and Tigers win Championships. I still have hope before the season begins that this will be the year for the Lions, even though I really know it won’t but it just might.
Recently, I’ve started to be a fan of the 76’ers. After they traded Iverson, they could have folded up shop and played for a lottery pick. But they toughed it out and really made a run to try to get a playoff spot. That really made an impression on me and made me a fan. I will still want to watch my Pistons thump them but any other night I will be pulling for them.
I have always wondered what sort of things makes someone else a fan of a team outside of their area. Is it a certain player, a memory of a great play, or a childhood incident that just stuck with them?
Why do you like your teams?

I'm Canadian, but I love my Red Wings, mainly because of hometown boy Steve Yzerman, and the fact that they were the first NHL team I've heard of. I'm also a Vikes fan, because I have family there.

I became a Mets fan as a kid because I got a Dwight Gooden baseball glove. That didn't last long, obviously. I think I become a fan of other teams because my DC teams often don't make the playoffs and I need to find someone else to root for. That's how I grew to like other teams like the Spurs and Mavs. Sometimes I just like a good story, like the Saints. Sometimes it's a player, like Malone/Stockton back in the day (and even though they're long gone, I still have a soft spot for the Jazz).

i like my teams because when i was a budding sports fan, i lived in idaho. lots of pro teams to support there, right? So since my mom is from milwaukee and her and her family always were rooting for the brewers and packers, they became my teams. My dad is from seattle and he always rooted for the mariners and sonics and seahawks, so those teams too. but he was a packers fan because of my mom, since the seahawks didn't exist at that time.

For baseball, I like the Cards and the Yanks. I grew up in central IL, about halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, and have lots of Cards fans in the family. My dad is a huge Mickey Mantle fan, so that's how I latched onto the Yanks. I also find myself rooting for teams based off of my rotisserie baseball team. I have several Padres and Reds players, so I keep tabs on those teams. Football has always been the Bears. Basketball, I love the Celtics, which isn't easy to do anymore because they really stink. But Bird played in the MVC in college, and I grew up watching Bradley Braves basketball, and remember hearing my dad talk about how amazing he was to watch in college.

I love my Steelers and Eagles, mostly due to the fact that there is an element of class about the teams. Despite T.O. in Philly, everything was pretty good. In the 'Burgh, the Rooneys don't let anything that smells of misconduct within the walls of Heinz Field, with the exception of the Bengals.

Im from Michigan, the Upper Peninsula. When i was a kid we got 3 tv channels,3,6,and 13.Channel 6 carried the Packer games,we saw the Lions twice a year, when they played the Pack.Same with radio,Brewer games were easy to get.So Im a Packer and Brewer fan. When i got a little older we moved into Marquette, whee cable!
Wings on Fox,and the Pistons were in the Bad Boy years.Wings sucked but had Probert,Kocur,Nill,Williams,Snepts...the good old days of hockey.
So for me,2 from Michigan,2 from Wisconsin.

There are many, many pro sports teams to choose from in Iowa. Not. I follow the Royals (painfully) because I saw my first major league game there. I follow the Steelers because I idolized Franco Harris and Lynn Swann as a kid. I love the Hawkeyes in all sports because Iowa is the Hawkeye state. NOT THE CYCLONE STATE. Losers.

Growing up Detroit, from 1970 to 1995, I watched & played hockey, football, baseball. Watched the games when possible. Through the leanest of years to the championships, it was always a good day at the stadium.

We Detroit fans have been very fortunate (excepting the Lions of course)over the past few years. My first sports memory was the Lions 5-0 loss to the Cowboys in the playoffs, 1972- I was 10. Greg Landry, Wayne Walker, etc. We had Billy Martin as the Tigers manager and still had some of the old guard from the 1968 Series winners. Guess I'm gonna have to blog on this one, BUT, the thing that stick out the most is the class individuals we have had the opportunity to watch. Kaline, Yzerman, Sanders, Grant Hill, etc. All outstanding citizens that you could proudly point to as an example for your kids to follow. From 1984 until now this has been sports nirvana. Even the sad-sack Lions have had occasional moments, but nothing like what the Pistons, Wings, Tigers (finally!), Wolverines, and Spartans have provided us with. Championships abound, we are indeed blessed.

I became a Seahawks fan as an impressionable 10-year old in Southern California...even as the Los Angeles Rams were about to go to the Super Bowl with Vince Ferragamo.
Two things happened that brought me around. (1) Jim Zorn is left-handed. I am left-handed and thought that was the coolest thing ever (I missed Ken Stabler by a couple years). (2) My uncle gave me (for what reason, I don't know) a Seattle Seahawks helmet clock that same year.
I loved the colors and I loved lefty Jim Zorn and I was hooked. I've never been to Seattle, but I've been a fan ever since 1980 and will be for as long as I can still think for myself. And maybe one day...a Super Bowl Championship will come our way.
