Since the talk of the town seems to be about Swedish prospect Fabian Brunnstrom, I figured I may as well weigh in with my two cents.
This kid scored 9 goals in 54 games. If we're talking an NHL season, he'd be projected at maybe 15-17 goals (that's being generous). He also went undrafted, wasn't selected to Swedens national team, and only recently moved up the ranks into the Swedish elite league. So why did it seem like every GM in the league was falling all over the place for him?
1. Brunnstrom would be considered a rookie, therefore would only have to be paid an entry level contract. In other words, you're getting a 23 year old, with a lot of potential, without having to pay top dollar for him.
2. He very well may be a diamond in the rough. Many undrafted players have gone on to become superstars in their own right and if he is in fact a true late-bloomer, Dallas will get their money's worth.
3. An NHL player of his calibur (whether or not over-rated) would still cost more than what Dallas is paying for Brunnstrom, therefore he ends up being quite the bargain.
It remains to be seen whether or not this kid is really as great as his agent has talked him up to be, but second or third line players are needed just as much as a first line guy, and why not try the old Detroit Red Wings adage: scout Europe, draft low, be one of the leagues's elite teams year in and year out.
Can't wait to see how this one goes.
