SERIOUSLY....WTF?!?!?
This has been one of the worst officiated games I've seen all year. Hatcher has gotten away with 2 punches to the face of Penguins, the goal that was clearly a goal that was disallowed, the "diving" call on Ruutu when he got punched in the face? C'mon! Helen Keller could have called a better game than these guys.
Perhaps worse than anything was the stupid, moronic, know-nothing announcers of Versus. They know nothing about hockey and I am sick of their biased commentary. Every penatly call against Philly was a bad call, they agreed with the "diving" call of Ruutu, and when Philly scored they had emotion in their voice. When the Pens scored, they sounded disappointed.
This is why Hockey isn't taking off. Versus sucks. The officials of tonight's game suck. I know everyone agrees that the Pens being in the Stanley Cup Finals would benefit the league the most and get the highest ratings, but after some game 1 calls and after tonights game, I wonder if the Refs and announcers are trying to prevent that from happening (or more likely trying to force out a 7 game series to get more exposure).
At least the Pens seem to not let the poor officiating bother them much. Currently they are up 3-2 with less than 10 to go in the game. If they can hold on to the lead and take the game...the poor officiating will just be a side thought.
Now if only we can get Mike Lang on Versus....

Report Offensive CommentAside from the announcers, I'd like to know from all the Penguin haters how that non-goal fits into the "get Crosby and the Penguins into the Finals" conspiracy theory?
That goal could have easily been awarded, and nobody would have much of a legitimate argument against it. So, that being said, if there is such a vast conspiracy to get Crosby into the Finals, why would the masterminds of this conspiracy waste a golden opportunity to help their cause? And it's not like the Commish and his co-conspirators didn't have time, as they took forever to make the call.
Any of you conspiracy theorists care to tackle this one?

Report Offensive CommentHey guys, bad calls and non-calls happen all the time. There's no point in ever dwelling on them, but especially not when you've won the game. If the Pens (or any other team for that matter) wants to be champions, they'll have to overcome some obstacles.

Report Offensive CommentRaleigh, my gripe isn't with the no goal call, but more about the conspiracy theorists who feel the league is rolling out the red carpet for Crosby. It just doesn't add up with the conspiracy theory so many claim is in motion, including some of the Flyers themselves.
Joffrey Lupul said "We have more to give. We were shorthanded most of the first period, and we know that's how it's going to be against this team. That's just the way it is with the Penguins. We've got to find a way to kill these penalties. It was pretty clear tonight they're going to get the calls."
Even Philly newspapers are saying they thought it was a goal.
"That the Flyers trailed by only 1-0 after one period was amazing given how badly outplayed they were. At the least, it should have been 2-0 as it took a long video review to determine that Sergei Gonchar's shot off Derian Hatcher did not cross the line with Sidney Crosby trying to whack it in during four-on-four play. The ruling on replay was inconclusive because goalie Marty Biron's glove obscured whether the puck was fully over the line, although logic suggested the puck was."

Report Offensive CommentThe annoucers are not doing it for me!!-- THEY TALK TO MUCH ABOUT NOTHING.. What happened to Play by Play ...
I wish I could lower the volume and listened to Mike Lang,--- on the radio..

Report Offensive CommentAnd we took 7 penalties. Which "bunch" against the Flyers were BS? Only one I can see you taking real issue with is the one on Briere.
And as I said, there are bad calls/non-calls in every game. It happens. For one thing, if the refs whistled every single infraction, there'd be like 25 penalties per team every game.
RaleighPens | 05/12/08, 10:57 AM
Report Offensive CommentThere were bad calls on BOTH sides. It's just a shame when a bad call would decide the game...that should be left up to the players.
WHERE IS MIKE LANG! He can recite the alphabet and keep you on the edge of your seat.

Can't argue with that - the notion that there is some sort of conspiracy is ludicrous.
As for the Flyers players, I suspect it's mostly just a case of working the refs in hopes of getting a tilt in their favor.

Report Offensive CommentFact is, VS announcers are at best God Awful. Enough about Timmonen already! How many Norris Trophies has he won---that's right--a big fat Zero. Good player, yes, hockey God, not even close. Injuries happen, Get Over It! Simply put, the Pens are a better team and it's showing. Philly is an average team so quit making excuses for them. Carey price was a sieve in net with more holes than swiss cheese. The Pens "O" would have put up 9 or 10 a game on him.

Report Offensive CommentLetting the Series be ugly is the refs just acting in concert with what the NHL wants: the highest ratings based on an interstate rivalry where facewashes draw blindeyes.

Report Offensive CommentI don't think the refs are biased exactly. I think they just have a "pull for the under-dog" tendency. It's hard for them to call that penalty on Rutuu because that would have put the Flyers down to 5-3 and there is no way they kill that penalty... yet Rutuu was punched in the face in front of everyone, so how could they ignore it?
I get the sense that they WANT to call it straight up. But they can't bring themselves to give the Flyers absolutely no chance and no hope.
OTOH, Throwing Breire into MAF should not have been a penalty, and Malkin should be fined for the elbow to the head.
Nothing is perfect.
The other point of the BLOG: I agree, the VS announcers have to go. (**** des: "He scales the puck into the zone" mean? Or is he saying "Sails the puck in." Eitehr way, stupid catch phrases that are annoying is passing for play by play.)
As bad as the play-by-play is tho, things don't get better at intermission. As much as I think Melrose is an under-achiever who doesn't know hockey as much as he thinks, even he is better than these guys...
