For all of the disenfranchised teams, those who do not stand a chance in the coaches poll, AP poll, or BCS ranking because of the establishment, THE TIME IS NOW!
The reason that Big Ten Schools are calling App State for tips on how to defend (Michigan's new) spread offense is because the spread is the the giant killer. Not the wishbone or the power I - the spread. All you need is a decent O-line, a mobile quarterback, and a fast receiver and you can put points up.
I'm not suggesting that all underrated schools move to the spread - I am suggesting that there is more parity than ever before in the game of college football. I am suggesting that this year, we will witness more upsets than we did last year, and that this trend will continue.
What will it take to bring sport to the game? What will it take for the provincial powers-that-be to step off their high horses and accept that football, like basketball, baseball, soccer, and every other sport is a competition? When someone from Ga Southern claims that they beat App St so by default, they could beat UM - and so they are better than FL...(you know those people)...most of us find that line that line of reasoning ludicrous.
Yet, that is the BCS in a nutshell. That is what it does. Anyone in support of computer algorithms instead of true competition has something to protect.
So, I contend that like any true revolution, a change in 1A football has to come from within. The fans of teams who continually get the shaft, need to speak out. This post isn't to rehash the age-old argument of playoffs vs. bowls. That would be a ridiculous conversation - bowls are about money, playoffs are about sport. Until there are playoffs in 1A, there is no real national champion, only an opinion.
This post is about rallying a movement. When App St plays LSU close, or beats them, will this get anyone's attention? Or will the traditionalists call that a fluke, too? My point is that there are great schools out there - 1A and the occasional 1AA that given the opportunity, will give the big guys a run for their money. Level the playing field. Blog, post, send - challenge the establishment. Give your school a chance at winning it all.

Big Ten schools calling App State
The Winston-Salem Journal reports that Appalachian State, which pulled a shocking 34-32 upset at then-No. 5 Michigan last season, is getting calls from Big Ten schools looking for an edge over the Wolverines. Coach Jerry Moore, the genius behind Appalachian State's three straight national championships has been receiving numerous phone calls. The favorite topic: ASU's spread offense, which is based on Urban Meyer's Utah model but involves nuances that Moore's staff learned while visiting West Virginia as guests of Coach Rich Rodriguez.

I don't think people call Appy st. beating UM a fluke b/c they are the 3 time D-IAA title holders, and the Michigan defense was just not up to speed with the offense they saw that day. Stanford beating USC or Colorado beating OU is more of a fluke in my opinion.
How 'bout 'em | 05/12/08, 11:27 PM
Report Offensive CommentAs a Michigan fan I do not call Appalachian State a fluke. I call it a well coached team that came into the Big House and kicked our butt. That game shouldn't even had come down to a blocked field-goal.
I give credit where it is due and Jerry Moore coached a hell of a team.

Report Offensive CommentAs a Michigan Fan, that game was hard to swallow. Michigab was out coached and out played by Appalachian State and deserved to win.

Report Offensive CommentIt's unfortunate that App. St. didnt get to play LSU last season while they still had Dexter Jackson, Corey Lynch, and Kerry Brown. They were big difference makers for them last season. It would have been fun to watch them play a few more top teams last year.

Report Offensive CommentAgreed Winged. Lots of question marks this year. LSU losing perilloux levels the playing field a bit - but end of day, they are still LSU. We've got some good kids returning - but those guys were play makers.

Report Offensive CommentMichigan Fans, thanks for the acknowledgment. Also, thanks for spelling "Appalachian" correctly. You'd be amazed at how many people can't. Good luck this season.

Report Offensive CommentOK, gotta chime in on this one. Perrilloux this, Perrilloux that. LSU won 2 BCS National Championships with mediocre QB's Matt Mauck and Matt Flynn. Unlike Florida with Tim Tebow, or Oregon with Dixon, or WV with Pat White,.....LSU does not need an All-Star Quarterback to take them to the big game. The best LSU team in the last five years took the field the year before last and achieved the Sugar bowl win blowing out ND 41-14 the week before UF blew out OSU 41-14. We had Russell at QB 1st round, Dwayne Bowe 1st round, Craig "Buster" Davis 1st round, Laron Landry 1st round, and the list goes on. I restate my position "LSU does not have to depend on an All-Star Quarterback to take them to the big game". The defense is always powerful and of course you know the clich?? concerning Championships and a strong defense. Appy State get's a huge ???atta boy??? from me on their performance last year but, ......BUT, If you placed them in a 1A conference and they play 1A each week, they would not be as successful as they are in their 1AA. There will be at least a 14 point win by LSU in this game. I give Appy State a lot of credit for their Michigan game but if they played 9 more times, UM would have won 8 of the 9. Wow, I just defended a Big Ten team, someone mark this on the calendar.

Report Offensive CommentA smaller team that plays a bigger school will always treat that one game as THE game of their season, the one that will give them the biggest opportunity to shine. For the bigger school, it is a potential landmine because they are often looking ahead to conference play or see I-AA as 'easy pickings'. Had Michigan not lost to Appalachian State last year, it could very well have been LSU losing to them this year. App St now takes on the role of 'giant killer' and won't have the element of surprise in their favor. Whether or not LSU wins, they won't be caught unaware like Michigan last year because of that loss.
Good luck with your season, App. St. See you on the field.

Report Offensive CommentApp State plays in the FCS. Therefore our big game is NOT UM or LSU ...and believe me we will be well within 14 points of LSU when the game is over, if not ahead.....Our big game is the FCS championship game in December in Chattanooga TN. Please dont use the condescending phrase "Its their big game" when we play BCS teams. It is NOT our big game. At ASU we want rings.
The only game that gets us rings is the NCAA Division 1 Championship Game...........
