PHILADELPHIA -- If revenge is a dish best served cold, then Vengeance Now -- the Philadelphia Flyers playoff slogan -- apparently works best with a cheese steak and a soft pretzel washed down with a super-sized cup of vitriol. The Flyers certainly took their sweet time about the whole vengeance thing, dropping the first three games of the Eastern Conference final, it, but in one fast and furious period against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 4 Thursday, they kept a grip on the series and showed some of the trademark moxie that has marked the four decades of the organization.
The Stanley Cup playoffs always exact a toll.
Who knew that after the first three games of this seemingly lopsided series, that would be the toll on the Pennsylvania Turnpike for Game 5 on Sunday?
Philadelphia barely hung on to win this intra-state war, 4-2, with an empty-netter, because of a remarkable first period in which it scored three goals, as many as it had managed in the past eight periods of a series. The Flyers also took a healthy 17 shots, only one fewer than they had in a middling effort in Game 3. While we are tidying up statistics from that spirited period, it must be noted there were also two full-throated "Crosby sucks" chants in the Wachovia Center, which was filled by 19,972 orange-clad loonies juiced on a hockey tradition like no other and a pre-game rendition of God Bless America sung jointly by the estimable Lauren Hart (live) and Kate Smith (no longer among us, but present through the magic of videotape).
The fans, who have had an, uh, issue with Sidney Crosby since November 2005 when the rookie had the temerity to object after being on the receiving end of an impromptu Sher-Wood root canal by Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher, needed some help in dealing with the Stanley Cup poster boy. On a fine spring night in which hockey could have been put to bed in Philadelphia, the aid was provided by an odd couple of defensemen, Jason Smith and Ryan Parent, who were unfairly burdened with responsibility because of injuries to the top two Flyers defensemen, Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn.
The 34-year-old Smith is the Flyers captain, a heart-and-soul blueliner but hardly a game changer, while Parent is a rookie who played the last quarter of the season with the Flyers but spent most of the year across the parking lot playing for the AHL Phantoms. Parent has first-pair potential -- indeed Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero helped draft Parent in the first round in 2005 when he was an assistant with Nashville -- but the left-handed shot figures never be much of a point producer in the NHL. Eventually, however, he should be a premier shutdown specialist, a role in which he earned his bones in 2006 world junior championship in Vancouver by pairing with Marc Staal to suffocate dynamic American forward Phil Kessel and Russian (and now Penguins) star Evgeni Malkin, whom Parent and his partner also had to foil on the odd shift Thursday. He and Smith combined to keep Crosby, Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis away from the scoresheet even though the Penguins linemates registered 14 shots.
Parent also picked up his first NHL point in the match, the second assist on Joffrey Lupul's opening goal after the defenseman rimmed the puck into the zone -- the kind of simple play that he made with a newfound confidence throughout his nearly 16 minutes of ice time.
"He played really well," goalie Martin Biron said. "The nerves he had earlier" -- Parent played Game 1 of the opening round against Washington and Game 3 of the Pittsburgh series after Coburn suffered his eye injury in the previous match -- "were out. He just played a simple game."
"He showed a lot of patience back there," said center Mike Richards, who conceded he was tired of listening to the "Pittsburgh this and Pittsburgh that" chatter that had dominated the talk in anticipation of an early start to a Penguins-Detroit Red Wings final. "He played like a veteran."
There isn't much difference in putting a horse collar on Malkin in the world juniors and Crosby on the NHL playoff stage, Parent said, but there is a difference in the talent level surrounding them. "Everybody's older, of course, but also the other guys are also good," said Parent, who, like Crosby, was born in 1987, but never had crossed paths with the Pittsburgh captain on Team Canada. "There you have to shut down one guy. Now, you worry about a lot more."
Parent made sure he introduced himself to Crosby with about 13 minutes left when the two did some minor jousting after Crosby buried a puck in Biron's logo, exchanging insults all the while. This was part of the tenor of the third period when the Flyers hung on and the Penguins pressed, at least until Lupul's empty-net goal with 33 seconds left altered the equation. In the final 23 seconds, the Flyers and Penguins accounted for 34 minutes of penalties -- including a slashing/roughing double minor on Crosby and a decent fight between Hatcher and Ryan Malone. This being Philadelphia, you couldn't expect less.
There remains a disparity in wins, skill and health that does not bode well for the Flyers in Game 5. If Pittsburgh goalie Marc-André Fleury cleans up some shoddy work on rebounds and the Penguins match the Flyers' early intensity, the series should screech to a halt on Sunday -- unless Crosby and friends again fall into the Parent trap.

It was a great first period for the Flyers. That was the Flyers team that beat the Caps and Habs. Just dont know what happened to them the first 3 games of this series. If they can keep up the intensity for 3 more games as they showed in the first period of game 4, the Pens could be in trouble. But that's a tall order. It may help if Coburn can come back from that nasty injury.
Steven's really let his team down. When Timmonen went down, he didnt do much to inspire them, You could hear defeat in the voices before the puck dropped in game 1. Perhaps now he has figured it out.

Report Offensive CommentYeah, within the 1st 2 minutes, I realized the Pens were in for a fight this game.
I was rather pleased with how they settled it down and got back into it, they just did so a little too late.
No worries though, back in Pittsburgh and with the Flyers still needing another 3 straight.

Report Offensive CommentJust like I asked for, the Flyers took note of Dallas and won one for "The Gipper". I do think they will come out Sunday with the same desperation and give a great game 5 performance. I truly cant say that it was all Flyers that made for a game 4 win for I think the Pens thought they had this series all wrapped up but as any strong team knows, they must execute everytime regardless. Now it's 9-9 for the season so now people can't say these teams are pretty even, they are dead even in W-L column and I hope they continue to give us hockey fans even more to look forward to in the next 3 seasons. What a great year for the NHL and it's loyal fans... Oh and GoPSUlions, saying that is like saying the lost the last game of the season so they didn't have to face the Flyers in the first round. I think not... Crosby and the gang would have LOVED to shut all the Philly fans up with a massacre in their hometown, but they just weren't prepared to finish the deal. Bring on Game 5!!!

Report Offensive CommentI can't believe Michael Farber can write a front page article for SI.com and not mention Jordan Staal. If this was a secondary article about the Flyer's resolve in the face of adversity...ok...I get that. But how do you tell the story of the game and talk about the PA toll booth, Kate Smith, and even Jordan's brother Marc in the '06 Juniors and not mention the guy that left his team to attend his grandfather's funeral because "there's somethings more important than hockey"; then at 19 years old, carried his team in the last period to within a goal of of the cup final when the superstars Crosby and Malkin were mentally absent? I hope the Pens close it out on Sunday and move on.

Report Offensive CommentIt's good to see the series stay alive. I had to look up Hatcher's fight with Malone on youtube. Good stuff. Players should know you don't want to go mono to mono with Hatch. He crushes people. Loved watching him in Dallas for years.

Report Offensive CommentFlyers made the changes and did exactly what they needed to do to beat their dreaded foes the Pens. Credit goes all the way around. Coaching, execution, emotion, hard work etc. Pens were totally off-guard. Only problem with it is after a first period adjustment, the Pens matched with their own little tweaks in second, and then outplayed them in the third. This does not bode well for Philly, as it will be a quick exit for them. If Philly could have strung out their ferocity for 3 periods, they would have had much more confidence going into Sunday. You gotta love Staal and the way he approached the game, as well as the way Therrien played him last night.

Report Offensive CommentAnd to TheDude... If you watched the same fight I did, Looks like Hatch destroyed his hand landing nearly 7 of his 9 punches punches in the helmet of Malone, with the remaining 2 to an unhelmeted, shirt covered head of Malone. Looks dramatic, but hardly a crushing fight, other than a crushed hand to Hatch.

I'm glad the Pens lost this one because now I get to go to the game on Sunday and watch them crush the crappy Flyers and dash the dreams of the lowest class fans in sports.

Interesting that you talk about the Flyers having the worst fans, and yet I don't see any comments in here from those awful flyer fans about how bad your team is and how worthless your players are. Why does everything have to be an extreme?
The Penguins are good. That's what happens when you live in the basement for about 10 years and pile up the first-round draft picks. I can respect they've built themselves back up. The Flyers had one terrible year and then they rebuilt themselves on the fly if you will, to get back into the conference finals this year. You can't respect that? They don't have the talent level the Penguins do, but they've still fought their way to this series against the other two offensive powerhouses in the conference. I can respect the Penguins drafting well and coming out of their slump, can you Pens fans not respect the Flyers willing their way to this point?
I don't really care who wins now. I've been a Flyers fan since I was 6 years old and to see the kind of fire these guys have played with in the last month is a spectacle we haven't seen in this city since the 80s. If this is Year One of rebuilding, then I can't wait to see what happens in Year Two. Best of luck to the Pens, in the series AND in managing the salary cap, they're going to need it in both. This is going to be a good rivalry for another couple years, at least.
Go Flyers!

Report Offensive CommentI just find it amusing that the Flyers fans were all happy and talking **** to the Pens players. I guess they don't realize that they're still opnly one loss away from the suicide rate going up in East Pennsylvania. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

Report Offensive CommentWith all due respect MacDaddy, your orange is coming off a bit loud. Requoting a bad quote from your organization about getting good picks due to lackluster performance is marginal at best. I remember very well the Penguins 2 Cups, and kinda remember Philly's last cup. (My sister bought me an authentic Flyers Jersey the year before, and I wore it proudly when I played in my youth.)
With all this trash talking about Philly fans, and Pens fans, I have to say I have been to more games at the Arena than at the Wachovia Center, (only 2)
The Philly fans I went with at the Wachovia were great. IMHO, it seems like Philly has about 15% knowledgeable die-hard fans, and 85% extremely die-hard fans who seem to have been brought up with the Broad-Street Bully mentality with seemingly no other knowledge of the game. That is a shame, coz during those years, Philly also displayed a lot of talent along with their toughness in those days. Shame that only the bully crap carried over to todays Philly fan.
It is impressive to see how the Flyers have turned it around. No-one ever would have thought. Kudos to the Flyer organization, however it is a shame the majority of your fan base (you seem to be in the minority) are clueless and classless.

Report Offensive CommentI'm pretty sure that there has been alot of Pens bashing by sad and pathetic Flyers fans all over this site so macdaddy apparently can't read. And again the statement stands Hatcher is a Pu__y. And for the morons out there who think Crosby sucks I'm guessing math is also not your forte either. Check out his stats from junior hockey and his stats so far in the NHL and I'm pretty sure he does NOT suck.
Otto is exactly right, it's a shame that only the bully mentality has carried over to the current crop of Flyers fans. Supporting your team is great and I shout my lungs out when I'm at the Pens games and I have 3 hockey shirts and I read all the articles. But, the level of rudeness and foulness that comes out of the Flyer fans mouths is just well SAD. And the fact that people feel afraid to go their and support a team other than the Flyers is also quite SAD. And to deny it is to be a liar because not only do Pens fans feel this way but so do fans of various other teams throughout the league. So, maybe it makes the Flyers fans proud. I'll have the satisfaction in the end of being proud that my team made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. GO PENS!!

Report Offensive CommentAm I the only Pens fan who is a little nervous right now?!?!?! The Flyers looked like the Flyers of the previous two series. If they pull out a win Sunday, we are in BIG TROUBLE. I just hope that we can give the Pens a home ice advantage and end this thing before it gets interesting. I think Philly is a tougher matchup than Detroit...I know, I am f'in nuts, but our fore-checking matches up perfect against Detroit. I think that the Pens will win the cup in 5 games.

Report Offensive CommentPhilly class - who are you kidding! Don't lump the Gipper in with a crowd that contiually shows a lack of class and respect for the game. Philly fans (I will admit there are a few decent ones but not many) are an embarrassment to their city, their families, and the entire sports world. Fortunately, we only have to put up with them for one more game this season.

Hather's a **** and he'll only fight people he knows he can beat. Malone's tough, but he's not a fighter. If he wants a challange then he should take on Laraque, but he won't becuase he's soft.
