Your favorite Seinfeld minor character?

When I read that the Flyers finally beat the Penguins to force Game 5 in the Eastern Conference semifinals, my first reaction was that maybe Manta would finally be taken down a notch. My second was to wonder, What would David Puddy think?

As a hardcore Devils fan, Elaine's mechanic-boyfriend wouldn't have much love for either team, though would likely prefer them to Finster's Rangers. Puddy, in fact, was such a diehard that he was brave enough to wear Devils body paint in the enemy lair of Madison Square Garden in Episode 109, The Face Painter. Would he do it again if given the chance? All signs point to YES!

Puddy, in fact, is my favorite minor character on Seinfeld. (I would personally exclude the four main characters and their parents, i.e. the Costanzas and Seinfelds, and Newman from said debate.) I realize those are strong words when one can choose from the likes of Jackie Chiles, J. Peterman, Kruger, Uncle Leo, Tim Whatley, The Maestro, Kenny Bania, Sue Ellen Mischke, Babu Bhatt, the Soup N-a-z-i, Library Cop Bookman, etc.

Which raises the question: Who is your favorite minor character? (Who says Seinfeld Day doesn't have any class participation?!)

Some other housekeeping matters -- Let's relate the story on the past eligibility concerns of former KU Jayhawk Darrell Arthur to a similar discussion this morning regarding O.J. Mayo and the ringer rooster; and ex-Olympian Tim Montgomery's 46-month prison sentence fits nicely with our earlier riff on Seinfeld jail scenes.

Puddy is my favorite too, boss. And that is saying a lot as a Ranger fan. In fact, if one was inclined to look back at my 5:53 a.m. post this morning (no missed alarm clocks fro me, either) one would see my attempt to use Puddy as my avatar. Alas, it was a bit dark.

For me, Mr Peterman.

I'll try to use Puddy again, just for this post...Old Devils colors, too - Red & Green.

I love Puddy's many layers, like the fact that he's religious. And in the one where he and Elaine kept breaking up (OK, that's a lot of them) and he's talking about how he hated to sit through her talking about her day and how she was smarter than everyone at work, it never fails to kill me the way he says, "It's brutal." That Patrick Warburton is a funny guy.

Pete, I keep hoping for a news item that would let you link it to the Chinese Restaurant episode, where they spent all that time waiting to be seated.

I'm not so sure he's acting. Did you ever see Rules of Engagement? Not a great show, but he is the highlight, and pretty much still playing (if it's acting) Puddy.

I almost did today with the O.J. Mayo epsiode. It would have been a stretch, but the thinking was ... the payments to Mayo were kind of a bribe to get him to play at USC and/or sign with the agent ... just as Jerry and Elaine unsuccessfully tried to bribe the maitre'd with a 20.

Except the Seinfeld bribe didn't work, which makes it more like the Reggie Bush case, in which that sports marketing guy allegedly gave Bush and his family some $300K worth of stuff and he signed with somebody else in the end anyway. Now that's a bad bribe.

Warburton does a ton of voice-over work, so you hear him a lot in animated shows ("Family Guy" and "The Venture Bros." both come to mine). He's great, no doubt.

It can be startling to encounter a second-tier Seinfeld character in an unfamiliar setting.

A few years ago, Disney opened a new attraction in Epcot called "Soarin'". (For those who don't know, it is a virtual flight over the varied landscape of California). The faux-airline pilot host for the pre-show (aka standing in line part of the ride) is none other than Puddy. Very wierd - I kept waiting for him to burst out with a "Support the team!" or "High five!"

If Puddy had many layers, I thinks it was Peterman's single layer that I found appealing. Self absorbed, somewhat oblivious, rambling a bit like a grandfather with a substance abuse issue

Tim Whatley. Anyone who'd change (gain) religion just for the jokes and keep copies of Playboy in his waiting room office is alright in my book.

Kramer's unseen friends - Bob Saccomano and Lomez come to mind - also have a certain appeal. And I bet they worked cheap.

a favorite minor character of mine was 3rd person speaking "Jimmy".

"JIMMY's DOWN !!"
