OK, so I'm sitting here watching the White Sox on one of the few times they are televised on WGN this year. 7th inning, 2 out, man on and Alexi Ramirez at the plate.
Yeah, Alexi Ramirez. The cuban defector. He of the .156 batting average that NO other team pursued.
Now, we all know that Ken "the hawk" Harrelson is as big a homer as they come, and we love him for it. But I literally laughed out loud at his comments when Alexi stepped to the plate. I was thinking maybe it was time for Hawk to give it up. What did he just say?
"This is the guy Alexei has been waiting for all year. He's going to hit his first major league home run right here". He didn't say I hope he does, or he might, nope, Hawk said he IS GOING TO. Then, the fool REPEATED it a couple pitches later. "Alexei WILL hit his first major league home run".
Well, Maybe not so much the fool, I guess.
Ramierez proceeded to hit a line drive into the left field stands.
Now keep in mind it's the 7th inning of a 0-0 game with two outs. That was the 4th hit of the game for the Sox.
Ramierez looks like he's about 150lbs soaking wet and would have trouble hitting a HR in batting practice.
Funny thing is, I've been watching Harrleson broadcast games for, well, as long as I can recall. I've NEVER seen him predict a HR before. I've many times heard him urge one "C'Mon Hurt, take this guy deep", but I've never heard him predict one.
What a great game this is when you can write an entire blog about something an announcer said and it makes sense. ;-)

Yeah, the Hawk is mainly why the White Sox are and forever will be the closest team to my heart. I almost get teary-eyed hearing him and DJ "put it on the boooaaardd Ye-YESSS!!!" when Paulie or Dye hit a walkoff and the Comisky PA blairs that Hey, Hey, Good-Bye song or whatever it'called. I don't think you'll ever see a more genuine broadcaster connect with his fans quite like the Hawk.

Hey - Hey -Hey
Goo-ood bye
That song?
Credit Nancy Faust for that one. The organ player for the last 30+ years.
She used to play it every time a starting pitcher was pulled from a game and occasionally after a big strike out. Nancy is a great lady, she still plays the organ on most day games. Been doing it as long as I've been alive (and I'm old)
