Rick Swanson:

The Red Sox placed Clay Buchholz on the disabled list, and they need to bring up a pitcher for Tuesday, May 20. Rumors are they are either pitching Bartolo Colon or David Pauley.

Here are their statistics in AAA, along with those for the player they should call up – Michael Bowden, who is in AA Portland:

Pitcher W L ERA IP BB SO WHIP
Pauley 4 2 3.06 35.1 9 19 1.27
Colon 1 0 1.12 8 1 7 0.75
Bowden 3 3 2.57 42.0 12 41 1.00

The real difference is when you look at the last four starts for each pitcher

  • Bowden: 23.2 innings, 9 hits, 2 ER, 1 walks, 23 strikeouts
  • Pauley: 20 innings, 25 hits, 10 ER, 6 walks, 11 strikeouts

David Pauley is 24 years old, and Michael Bowden is 21. That is why Pauley would be chosen over Bowden.

Boston has another young pitcher that could help now, but he too is too young for the Big Leagues. His name is Daniel Bard. He is pitching in obscurity in the Carolina League for the Greenville Drive. When he pitched for North Carolina in the NCAA World Series in 2006, scouts said he had stuff that could put him in the majors that fall. Here it is nearly two years later, and he has not progressed at all in the farm system. His numbers this year, prove that he has cured his wildness from last season.

Pitcher W L ERA IP BB SO WHIP
Bard 1 0 0.67 27.0 4 42 0.59

Bard is only 22 years old, and Boston refuses to let young pitchers have a shot at the Big Time. Bard is three months older than Joba. Do you think if Bard and Bowden were with the Yankees, that they would be given a shot in the Big Leagues?
