Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I don't follow horse racing. When I think of horse racing, I naturally think of the Kentucky Derby, small men in funny outfits, rich women in even funnier outfits and bit hats and horses that run really fast while getting the crap beat out of them. I guess you just have had to grow up around it to really appreciate the "beauty" of the sport.
Sport, now there's an interesting concept.
These so called "sports" where the animals do all the work. From horse racing, to greyhound races to polo, is it ever mildly rude to consider that the animal is doing the majority of the work while the driver just, well, steers?
So now that Big Brown has won two of the three major horse races of the 'Triple Crown', there's much talk about a first time Triple Crown winner in 30 years. We have the PETA folks up at arms after the tragedy that happened at the last race and the rest of us mildly entertained for 45 seconds until the race is over and our short attention spans are turned to other things more important. Let's face it. This whole thing has to do with money. LOTS OF MONEY. Between the millions that are brought in with betting and the millions more made with stud fees, this sport is not going anywhere any time soon, no matter how many animals go down in a painful blaze of glory right before our very eyes.
So let's sit back and cheer on Big Brown as he races towards destiny for the last race. Maybe we'll be entertained by the race itself. Maybe we'll be amused by the short men running around in clown outfits or maybe we'll just take it for what it is - a part of Americana that has been around for a long time that few of us really will ever get.. or appreciate.
