DC Sports Nut: Nats, AGAIN??
|

Picking up from our last blog...

Hagerstown lost last night, 6-4. Actually, this game was lost before the Suns even came up to bat. I mean, how else to explain 2 errors, 2 wild pitches, 3 unearned runs...and this is all before Hagerstown comes up to bat in the 1st?? Then to add insult to injury, 3 more runs scored by Kannapolis in the top of the 3rd...walked in.

There's a reason you sit in low Class-A, and not high-A, AA or AAA baseball. I saw it up close and personal last night.

Ah, but there is hope for the Nats' farm system. Michael Burgess, who Baseball America pegged as the 4th-best prospect in Washington's farm system, proved his worth in the bottom of the 6th by leading off with a smack over the right-field wall--to cut it to 6-1. Scoring 3 more runs during the 8th and 9th innings only cut the final margin to 2 runs.

So, that takes care of the action from last night. Now, to the main topic of this piece...

The people at the Washington Post have gone and projected the Nats' future starting lineup, come 2011. (They did it for the Orioles too, but look, folks. This is a Nationals blog I write. Comprende??) So I thought, why not give my fellow FNers the chance to see the future of the Nats??

     Here we go:

Outfield

LF Lastings Milledge...CF Justin Maxwell (currently in Harrisburg [AA])...RF Michael Burgess (currently in Hagerstown [low-A])

Infield

3B Ryan Zimmerman...SS Esmailyn Gonzalez (not sure if he's @ Potomac [high-A] or Vermont [short-A])...2B Stephen King (Hagerstown; currently plays 3B)...1B Chris Marrero (Potomac)

Catcher

Jesus Flores

Pitchers

LHP Ross Detwiler (1st round pick last June; currently @ Potomac)

RHP Collin Balester (currently @ Columbus [AAA] w/4-2, 3.79 ERA)

LHP Cory Van Allen (5-0, 0.68 ERA @ Potomac and Harrisburg...currently @ Harrisburg)

LHP John Lannan (already in Washington)

RHP Jordan Zimmermann (started 2008 @Potomac, now @ Harrisburg)

Zech Zinicola (now @ Harrisburg; projected to be closer when he gets to Washington)

So, there you have it. There is help for the Nats yet; it's just that we have to wait awhile for it. (BTW, the game today with the O's is in a rain delay...which explains why I'm writing this earlier than usual on a Sunday. Oh, joy.)

Oh, and the Nats WON Sunday over Baltimore, 2-1. (Not that ANY of you care, mind you...lol)
