Are the Irish Eyes Smiling? | Watty's Word

Notre Dame football, as everyone knows went a miserable 3-9 last season. However, things should be a little better this year. Charlie Weis was able to land a "top 10" recruiting class and the Irish beefed up their O-line in the offseason. Alot of ND fans are really hoping for a winning record, although Notre Dame's schedule is a little easier than year's past they still get a mix of poor programs and the powerhouses. They play San Diego St. in Week 1 (Oh God let them win!) then they take on two Big 10 teams in the Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan St. Spartans. After that, they take on two home games against Purdue (Big 10) and Stanford. Then, its back on the road at North Carolina (a sleeper program, that the Irish need to be careful of.) After a Bye Week, the Irish play at Washington and home versus Pittsburgh. Then it's at Boston College and Navy before coming home against Syracuse and then the season finale against USC.

If Notre Dame gets lucky and plays the way their capable of, they could be a surprising 8-4. However, there are still many people out there suggesting the Irish should join the Big 10. I dont really know what to think about that. I mean, you never want to mess with tradition and history (espically one like the Big 10's or Notre Dame's) but every single year Notre Dame schedules about 3-4 Big 10 opponets. Usually 2 of them are Michigan and Michigan St. and the few seasons before they played Penn St.

Notre Dame has alot of winnable games this year, but lets just hope they actually win those games. Im very happy they scheduled those games maybe this will be the year they can get a winning record and start to turn this program around and Charlie Weis can prove to the public that even though he looked at those tapes of Spygate for the "halftime adjustments" he actually is a decent coach.

Great optimism. I had the Irish going 7-5. There are going to be a few blowouts by ND and then a couple of blowouts by the other teams. What's worse is going to be the couple of losses by 3 pts or less; all do to bad luck, unfortunate turnover, or blown coverage. I'm a devoted fan and will always defend them and their courage to fight the odds every year. Losing to Navy was harsh, but we honestly couldn't believe we would beat them forever. As for joining the Big 10 or any conference, I'm all against it. Its not just tradition, but the freedom of competition to know we can challenge whoever the Irish chooses. Not stuck in the same rotation of the same teams year after year. Sure being Independent means playing some lackluster games like Vanderbilt in the past or San Diego State this year, but look at the SEC or ACC and tell me half their games aren't always gimmies. The Irish have a bright future and this year will be a breakthrough year for them.
