What was the most insane/ridiculous.agonizing game in all of baseball yesterday (Sunday)? Easy, my San Diego Padres topping the Cincinnati Reds 12-9 in 18 freaking innings. This coming after the Padres played a 21-inning affair earlier this season and losing 2-1 to the Colorado Rockies (really a game San Diego has yet to recover from if you ask me). But really yesterday, as far as Reds and Padres fans, there were no winners here. These are two awful, awful teams mired in last place in their respective divisions who just taxed their bullpens beyond belief, let alone the Reds' starting rotation, and saw their batting orders averages drop embarassingly. I don't even want to think about the batting averages of Khalil Greene and Tadahito Iguchi after yesterday San Diego fans.
But I did find one fact in the North County Times regarding yesterday's game that I'm taking as the most interesting of the game (this and maybe some Padre optimism for the distant future regarding Josh Banks giving six innings on the mound for the win).
If you don't read the NC Times, you missed this little factoid about starting pitcher Greg Maddux, who again did not get the win, thanks to a number of bumbling factors out of his control with the Padres. I'm not sure how the paper got this info because I have not seen anywhere else today (Monday, Memorial Day), but nonetheless, it's what I'll remember about yesterday. Here it is from the NC Times:
"Padres starting pitcher Greg Maddux left the game after 5 1/3 innings and was allowed to leave the ballpark. He flew to Las Vegas and was in his home an hour before the game ended."
Go figure. Go Padres.
