Just got back from an eventful 3 days in Memphis. I was there for a wedding. It is surprising that I had never been there before, seeing as how I am from Knoxville. I loved the city right off the bat. For those of you who have never been there, let me offer my advice.
Rendevouz- The best ribs I have ever had. It is in a back alley and hard to find, and I am in no position to give you directions. All the locals will know where it is, however, because it is the most popular restaurant around. I recommend it to anyone going to Memphis.
Graceland- To be honest, it has a lot of hype to it. However, the house is beautiful, and it is the place where the king himself used to live. It is not a must-see, as some will tell you. It is mainly a tourist attraction that doesn't carry its weight. If you have extra time, though, you should check it out.
Beale Street- A lot like Bourbon Street(except less rowdy). A very exciting place to be, especially on late weekend nights. Blues can be heard all down the street. It is blocked off and filled with many locals and tourists alike. Many restaurants can be found here. Beale Street is a toned-down version of Vegas.
B.B. King's Restaurant- You have to go here. Great food and also a live band playing the blues. The waiters and waitresses are nice and amiable, and you might catch B.B. King in one of his four trips there each year.
Redbirds game- The Memphis Redbirds(minor league) have a great team and stadium. Good seats can be found for cheap prices and the talent field is almost as good as the MLB. Very exciting. This is a must see.
Nathan Bedford Forrest's Statue- A great American icon and general in the Civil War. Though he has been plagued by much undue controversy, he remains one of the(if not the) greatest of his time.
Altogether, Memphis is a beautiful city next to the Mississippi River. My blues heritage makes me love the city even more. I accomplished all this in 3 days. Anyone in or visiting Memphis should greatly consider my advice.

Report Offensive CommentAmazingly, as a huge Elvis fan who lives about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Memphis, I've never taken the time to go to Graceland. Really no desire to see it. Memphis itself is pretty much Beale street, in my view. The rest of the city I'd avoid at all costs, just as I'd never venture out of the French Quarter in N.O. Beale street is to the Blues what Bourbon street is to Jazz. Both are traditionally poor southern cities with rich cultural histories. Beale street is probably...no definitely...less commercialized than the French Quarter, though. Both are overcrowded, drunken mind orgies worth seeing once in your life, but not a place you want to be arrested.
All that said, I'd still go to Nashville, first. It's NOT the country haven most people associate it with. Sure, there are plenty of country bars, but it's much more diverse than that. You'll find Jazz clubs, blues clubs, hip hop clubs, rock clubs, etc. A three block walk down second avenue will afford you an incredibly diverse musical foray.
