SI's David Epstein reports from San Francisco, where Trevor Graham was found guilty of one of the three counts on which he was being tried - lying to federal investigators on the issue of whether he had ever met Angel Heredia, an admitted drug dealer who allegedly supplied many of Graham's athletes with performance-enhancing drugs. The jury - that is to say, the foreman and one other juror - were the holdouts that kept Graham from being convicted on the other two counts: lying about whether he had ever met Heredia in person, and on whether he had assisted athletes in doping. Theoretically that means Graham could be retried on those counts. Epstein, SI's go-to reporter/writer on the doping beat, does a nice job of untangling the complicated verdict and getting some insight into the thoughts of the jurors that held back from convicting Graham across the board. Another chapter in the unfolding story of systematic doping in track and field closes, but many questions remain, and many more record books might be revised before all is said and done. With the Beijing Olympics organizers promising that this will be the cleanest Olympics ever with more drug tests administered than ever before, news of just how far previous generations of athletes have gone to cheat makes it hard to believe there will ever be an entirely clean Olympics, no matter how much we may wish for it.
