Over the weekend CBS premiered a version of MMA(mixed martial arts).  I tried watching it, I really did.  I just wasn't that into it.  I understand why people like it, it's just not for me.  I don't have a preference towards boxing either.  However, boxing is much more tolerable to me.

Now, I'm right in that age group that MMA is trying to hook.  I'm 19, almost 20, and MMA has just never appealed to me.  I've tried watching it on several different occasions.  I've always walked away from watching MMA with just a horrible feeling, like I've watched a little bit of the downfall of American civilization.  Maybe, the downfall of American civilization is a bit overly dramatic but, you all get my point.

When I was younger the thing for everyone to be into was "professional" wrestling.  I remember kids were getting hurt trying the moves that "professional" wrestlers were doing on each other.  You'd always here don't try this at home...I'm just waiting for this to happen with MMA.  You know it's going to happen...the MMA people are trying to lure in the next generation of TV watchers and Pay-per view subscribers.  They're trying to lure that generation in...and their are going to be some younger kids who are going to try fighting each other just like they see on TV.  After there is some injury to a kid who is trying something they see while watching MMA there is going to be an outcry of parents saying they should take this off.  That's the sort of thing that's really lead to the lessening in popularity of "professional" wrestling.  That exact same situation is going to lead to the decrease in popularity of MMA..this is going to happen in the future, I'm not saying when but, it will happen.

MMA reminds me so much of all  the stuff I've heard about bare-knuckle boxing of the late 1800's to early 1900's..except much more violent.   I've heard one of the guys whose in charge of an MMA organization say that in the last 15 years there hasn't been a serious injury in his specific organization.  But, seriously?  In a "sport" where there's so much contact and violence you know there's going to be at least one serious injury sometime.   To me MMA is basically an orchestrated street fight.  It just doesn't appeal to me.

What are your thoughts about MMA?
