Bring in Denny Green, because apparently everyone is ready to crown the Cowboys. The latest wave of adulation for the 'Boys comes on the tails of news that they re-signed Terrell Owens and Pacman Jones is partially reinstated.
T.O. is an outstanding player and the Cowboys are definitely a weaker team without him. But don't get too excited about his four-year, $34 million contract. How many playoff games has Owens won in Dallas? (zero) How old is he? (35) How often has he been hurt? (often). How emotional is he? (postgame tears).
The recent drying up of the receiver free-agent pool might have given the Cowboys little choice but to extend Owens. But there's still a lot of risk. At his age, he's not going to get less injury prone. And how many times have we seen players sign big contracts and subsequently get hurt.
Several writers have speculated this contract extension is insurance to make sure he doesn't get upset with the team. To even suggest that points to Owens' capricious nature. Although he's behaved fine in Dallas - except for run-ins with Bill Parcells, his vitamin overdoes and an ill-timed Jessica Simpson joke - his fiery days in Philadelphia aren't that far behind him. That was only three years ago. I have trouble believing players arrive in Dallas and completely transform themselves just by wearing the star. Which brings us to ...
Deion Sanders II. That's what Pacman Jones better be to justify all the headlines he's gotten. Finding the chemistry to win a Super Bowl is an elusive assignment, which seems to have a lot more to it than just talent. Whatever the perfect mix is, Pacman doesn't move the Cowboys in the right direction.
Dallas is a good team. But stop the offseason coronation. Where's the skepticism? This is T.O. and Pacman we're talking about. And I haven't even gotten to Wade Phillips or the loss of Tony Sparano. Not to mention the brutal NFC East.
As usual, I have a feeling some of you disagree. Let me know below in the comments.

Yeah, ask how old TO is all you want... then ask yourself who has the most TD catches in the NFL over the last two years...

Report Offensive CommentOh, and maybe you aren't very familiar with the situation in Dallas, but Tank and TO are cited as two of the biggest leaders in the locker room by players and coaches. So bash them for past transgressions all you want, but people have been doing that for a long time, and all I know is we got an excellent player in TO, and a solid one in Tank.

Report Offensive CommentAs great as TO is, to say he's going to get the same production over the next 4 years is not realistic. But then, its an NFL contract, probably front loaded so they can cut him in a couple of years. Dallas has been good at taking these out of control guys and controlling them, but there's still the fact they haven't won a playoff game since 1996. So they can't be "crowned" yet.

Report Offensive CommentI hate to admit it Perloff, but who else comes cloes to competing with the Cowboys for the NFC. The Giants have the best shot, followed by Seattle, then Philly and Minnesota have a punchers chance. But don't be mistaken, the Cowboys are the favorites right now to win finish with the best record in the NFC. Don't forget though, the Cowboys have not proven ANYTHING yet

Report Offensive CommentThe 'Boys were favorites LAST year when they (read: Romo) gagged in the playoffs yet again. Since we're in the mood of "asking ourselves", let's ask ourselves this: when was the last time having the most TDs over a two year period got you invited to the postseason? Besides, crowning division and conference champs based on how they look on paper is irresponsible at best; that's why they play the games. Who HONESTLY thought, at this time last year, that NYG would win the Super Bowl? Anything can (and most likely will) happen. Just the way that the Eagles got killed for not getting "over the hump" for four straight years despite their talent, 'Boys fans need to understand that, past rings notwithstanding, y'all need to win something in the last DECADE before you start having parades...

Report Offensive CommentI'm a lifelong Cowboys fan and I haven't read of anyone "crowning" them. I don't really know where you got that idea, but then, you East Coast people don't usually know much about any team west of the Mississippi anyway, unless it's in California.
The Cowboys have a good team but they also have a much more difficult schedule than the one they played in 2007. I think 10-6 is a realistic prediciton with 11-5 being an outstanding goal. I also think that Philadelphia will give them a run for the NFC East crown.
As for T.O. and Pacman, you should really think about what you are writing. I daresay that if either of them were signed by say, the Patriots, you would be first in the coronation line.
BTW, you might start thinking about another line of work because your sports writing is pretty lame.

Report Offensive CommentI agree 100%. Who is their other receiver? Their own cornerback is calling out their 'pro bowl' safety, who can't cover a pea with a blanket. How many playoff games has Tony 'No-Show' won?

Report Offensive CommentI agree with the ruffneck. Perloff should really find another profession. This is not journalism just biased hate against the cowboys. I just finished reading Peter King now that is journalism this belongs in a Junior College newspaper somewhere.

Report Offensive CommentAre you high?
TO is hands down the 2nd best WR in the league at the moment.
His new deal is nothing more or less than a 3yr contract and he will earn EVERY penny of it for Dallas playing at the highest level.
Out of the last 3 seasons (Incl Philly), he has missed all of 6 games.....so in other words, he has been in 42 of 48 regular season games.
PacMan is ZERO risk for Dallas. They held their draft as if he didnt exist and he will still have to beat out Jenkins and Henry if he ever wants to start (which he will).
If Pac acts up, then he gets cut and Dallas loses a 4th round draft pick - wow.
Dallas has made VERY good offseason moves and has placed themselves with enough depth to make a great run this year.
Barring major injury, they should be right there come December and Jan.

Report Offensive CommentSooo funny, eagles fans talking about Romo and TO, please, I think TO has been great for the Cowboys as was for the iggles, the Boys have a very good football team, but we know the birds will be ready so the Giants, so is goign to be a great season with great NFCEAST games, I hate the eagles but I do appreciate that this team under coach Andy (even his own and private problems) always play hard.

Report Offensive CommentHey ruffnek, the team that knocked Dallas out of the playoffs will also give the Cowboys a run for their money for the NFC East
NYGiantsSBXLIICHAMPS | 06/03/08, 06:47 PM
Report Offensive CommentEagles fans are morons. Get ready for a long streak of Cowboys dominance over Philly. Romo is WAY better than McNabb these days. All the Eagles have done in the offseason is add an extremely overpriced corner. Kind of like the 49ers last year. That's not going to keep Winston Justice from being dominated like he was by Umeniyora and McNabb will end up on his back. If McNabb finishes the season I will be shocked.

Report Offensive CommentTO is far from the 2nd best reciever in the league... I would go randy moss, reggie wayne, Wes welker, Andre Johnson, and then TO... There all great recievers, But TO is an idiot. At least Randy Moss grew up. Owens will probably be complaining about nursing homes in his 90's

Report Offensive CommentSorry Perloff...your article reeks of bias.
How come there's no hate for Randy "I play when I wanna" Moss? Exactly. At least T.O. publicly complains Mon-Sat, but shows up on Sundays. It seems like Randy was drafted by the Vikes, went into the Witness Protection Program for a few years, and then got picked up by the Pats. At least Terrell plays.
Dude, go back to screening Dr. Z's email. You're atrocious as a writer. Nothing personal.

Report Offensive CommentThe Boyz have arguably the best roster in the NFL and have some great young depth that would be starters on most teams. Chemistry this off-season has been fantastic and participation in voluntary events is almost unanimous. The only concern I have is whether they realize that the time to play their best ball is AFTER they make the playoffs. For several years now they have faded in December. Here's hoping that with age comes wisdom and they don't miss out on the chance to win three or four SuperBowls in the next five years.
