Terry Glenn

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for another Super Bowl run once again, and as always, not all the pieces are falling into place. This time it's WR Terry Glenn. Glenn has reportedly been asked to sign an injury settelment that would take affect if he re-injures his right knee. The settelment would pay out $500,000 to Glenn instead of his $1.74 million base contract if he is unable to play. Considering Glenn was paid over $5 million last year for 4 plays, that number doesn't seem so insufficient. On top of that, Glenn failed a physical after the season and still hasn't passed it because of problems with the right knee that was operated on twice last season. Glenn has thus far refused to sign the injury settelment, stating, "I really want to play,", and, "I thought the team had confidence in what I was doing in the off-season program that I can make it through the season. But with this contract, there might not be that much faith at all." Glenn's refusal to sign the injury settelment has forced Jerry Jones to keep him out of OTA's thus far. There is no reason to have Glenn out there practicing with the team and risk re-injuring his problematic knee. The risk is too great right now. Glenn passed on microfracture surgery last year in hopes of returning late in the season, but team doctors still stress that Glenn will need microfracture surgery on that right knee eventually. Instead of microfracture surgery, Glenn has opted to strengthen his knee in the offseason in hopes of playing this year. It's up in the air right now if Glenn will even see the field this season.

Terry Glenn fired his agent recently and is handling all negotiations by himself. Somebody should tell Glenn he doesn't have any negotiating room. He is coming off two knee surgeries from last year and will probably need microfracture surgery soon. Nobody knows if that right knee will hold up one play, one game or one year. If he does go ahead and re-injure that knee his career will likely be over. The recovery time for microfracture surgery is minimum one year, if at all. With Glenn entering his 14th season this year, surgery would be hard to come back from. This is the reason why Jerry Jones wants Glenn to sign the injury settelment. What's the alternative for Glenn? If he doesn't sign, he will probably get released. Good luck finding a team that will sign a 34 year old receiver with a bum knee, for $1.74 million no less.

It seems to me that Terry Glenn is between a rock and a hard place. He has no other option if he wants to play this year. The Dallas Cowboys are loaded with talent and ready to make a Super Bowl run, So Glenn, get with the program and sign that settelment!

Glenn's on his last 'run' as a player in the NFL..., even if he signs the agreement, he's got $500K in his bank account and he'll be healthy..., probably! The Boys were fine without Glenn last season and will be this year.

glenn is a guy who prolly should of retired a couple years ago...he might have another year in him but as of now he is doing to his career in my oppinion what jerry rice did at the end of his career, he is hangin around too long for nothing. If he wants to be a fourth WR sign on and hope the rest of the team can win a ring. or else retire

June 4, 2008  02:35 PM ET

He should sign the settlement and retire after the season.

June 4, 2008  02:42 PM ET

Glenn needs to realize his career is coming to an end.....and sign the waiver
It was a great trade to get him from Green Bay for a 6th rounder
And speaking of pieces not falling into place, I cant believe Greg Elllis is complaining over practice snaps. that is ridiculous

June 4, 2008  02:44 PM ET

I love Glenn. He is a stud when healthy. However he needs to wake up and smell the coffee. I can understand players wanting to keep playing beyond what their bodies allow, but multiple surgeries on your knees really dampens one's ability to play.

I agree that he needs to sing the settlement and get out there for what is probably his last shot at a SB ring.

Good blog.

Brown Magic is a smart dude. SI should sign him up to write for them

June 4, 2008  08:54 PM ET

dallas looks good i think they will make the superbowl and i think it will be mostly without glenn as an impact. The cowboys do need a better second reciever then clayton, a faster one would be nice. If i were glenn i would take it he is on his last legs

June 4, 2008  08:56 PM ET

i still think though there is maybe 50 catches in glenn which would be good at 3rd reciever but is that wort 1.74$ mil

June 4, 2008  10:13 PM ET

Very well written. Good work
You are right, but, we are talking about 1 million here. In that business that is " chicken feed." They should have him do what he thinks is best for him, play him, and any help he gives them is a bonus...For that kind of money, just play him. If he goes down, pay him and move on. Not worth the hard feelings it " may " cause with other players on the team. With the rift that is coming between the owners and the players and the agents and the next contract, one million is cheap for the good will it may buy.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Raymond. You are too kind.

I think the cowboys should almost part ways because the production you will get from glenn is minimal and can be done by a young wr on the team already, plus you are taking a roster spot from young players who could probably contribute more than glenn at this point in his career.

Good piece Brown Magic! As much as I love Terry Glenn, sadly he is at the end of his career and needs to be thinking more about retirement than the risk of being injured again, which is more likely than not! Take the money and run, that's your best (only) option at this point!

June 5, 2008  09:21 AM ET

If I am Terry Glenn I do as he has done already....keep working out, and only show up for practice when you have to.

Heck, I would not be suprised to see Dallas limit his reps in practice all season long (which is a good idea fyi).

This is Glenn's last shot, b/c another injury here, at his age, ends it all for him.

I like Terry, and with him, TO, Witten and Crayton on the field all at the same time, it will drive defenses batty trying to cover each guy.

Lastly, I cant blame the Dallas brass for attempting the buy out as well....

The last thing Jerry wants to do is pay anther 1.7 million to a guy riding the oak all season long b/c he tore his knee/leg up again during practice of all things.

June 5, 2008  11:23 AM ET

Even if Terry Glen's knee were to hold up the entire season I don't see him being able to get on the field much. With his age and limited play last year I would question putting him on the gameday roster. I would save that spot for someone who can contribute more on special teams.

June 5, 2008  01:17 PM ET

Glenn is done and needs to leave with class. I would sign the papers and be glad to play. H

June 5, 2008  01:18 PM ET

He's body can only take so much and he will be limited no matter what. I would take what I could get at this stage of his career.

June 6, 2008  02:46 AM ET

We didn't need Glenn last year? I call bullsh*t on that. We could have used a healthy Glenn when we lost to the Patriots. They were doubling TO and Witten. Craytons good but only as a third receiver. Not to mention the other two regular season games that the Cowboys lost. You guys forget how awesome Glenn was before he had the knee injury! He was better than TO during the first year that TO was with the Cowboys! Besides...If I was Glenn, I probably wouldn't sign that settlement, ether. I probably we see it as a slap in the face, too. It's not like he was sitting on his ****, last year. Are they going to pull that stunt with every Cowboy that gets injured? However, I can see how Jones see things. Bur I really want to see if Glenn can get near as good as he was before the injury! Because, if he can...That would be like having to TO on the field...Plus, you have Witten and third receiver Clayton. I, at least, want to see. I hope both Jones and Glenn will be able to compromise and get something worked out!

June 6, 2008  08:53 AM ET

How can Glenn see it as a slap in the face. He was one of the highest paid players last season, and for what? A total of 4 snaps during the regular season. I didn't see him complaining when he made over 5 million last year for those 4 snaps. Oh sorry, I forgot, he did have one reception in the playoffs didn't he? I like Glenn and would love to see him come back strong, but he needs to just sign this settlement and be thankfull that he still has an opportunity to play. What other team in the league would take a chance on signing him at this point in his career?

June 8, 2008  10:09 PM ET

I don't really care if Glenn signs now or if he waits until he realizes that he has no choice; sign or don't play. If he wants a shot at a ring, he'll sign. If he doesn't then I hope he enjoys being released into retirement.
