There are two things that really effect how you hit your ball.

Bottom English

And Upper English. For Bottom English, you need to hit the ball near the bottom of it, but not too low or you will make the ball jump. If you hit it right, once the cue ball hits the ball you are trying to hit, the cue ball will stop once it hits, and won't follow the ball into the pocket, thus; avoiding a scratch.

Next up is upper english. Upper English is when you want the cue ball to follow the ball into the pocket, or something like that. If you are hitting it off a bank, putting Upper English really helps those kind of shots.
