I kinda like Leafs fans. They usually don't bash other teams, because quite frankly, they have no right to. Living just outside the city of Toronto, I do hear a lot of news surrounding the Leafs, and you must be living under a rock if you haven't heard about Ron Wilson possibly becoming the next head coach.
Leafs fans discretion is advised.
It seems like the Leafs front office guys either think the fans and media are really stupid, or just too darn loyal, because the amount of contradictions spewing from Leafs headquarters is astonishing. They wanted a new GM in place before hiring a head coach. But alas, Ron Wilson seems to be on the cusp of singing a four year deal. So either Cliff Fletcher is going to stay on as GM, or the new GM will be someone who loves Ron Wilson. And the plot thickens. Brian Burkes name has been tossed around since the moment John Ferguson Jr was fired. Oh but he's tied up with the Ducks. What to do, what to do.
The bottom line is that even though Leafs brass claim they want to see this team win, they aren't exactly doing much to help that cause. Yes Ron Wilson is the best coach to have not won a Stanley Cup...(I digress) but what exactly does he have to work with here in T.O? Mats Sundin? No wait, he may not re-sign with the team. Is Ron Wilson the best coach for a rebuilding team? That remains to be seen, however what seems more likely is that the Leafs will continue to just miss the playoffs, or lose in the first round, for the next few years. Which means mid-round draft picks, disappointed fans, and more empty promises. If this team was in fact rebuilding, they should have stuck with Paul Maurice, gotten rid of Sundin for some more draft picks and prospects and wait their turn just like Pittsburgh, Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago and Edmonton are.
Hang on though, maybe the leafs want to go the route of the Red Wings; low draft picks win championships. They should then be looking for a top scout rather than GM. Good luck Leafs fans, my heart goes out to you.
