It hasn't even been a week since Jerry Jones handed Terrell Owens a three year extension, and Owens is making headlines again. This Weeks T.O. news has brought us a report that has Owens being placed on the leagues "resonable cause" program for missing phone calls from the league to set up a drug test. Even though Owens had a "Plausible" explanation for missing the phone calls, he now can be tested up to 24 times annually for performance enhancing drugs. Players that miss league drug test can be either fined or suspended by the league office. Owens will not be fined or suspended by the league for this infraction. However, Owens has been warned if simular infractions occur in the future he could be both fined and suspended by the league.
One footnote that has not been emphasized is that Owens has never missed or failed a league administered drug test in his 12 years in the NFL. And since missing the league's calls two weeks ago, Owens has passed the leagues drug test. Since coming into the league in 1996, Owens has built a reputation for his rigorous training. Something he picked up in his first five years in the league, playing with legendary receiver Jerry Rice. It is Owens' conditioning that allows him to be productive this late in his career. A view that was echoed last week by owner Jerry Jones. "Terrell is uniquely physically fit," Jones said. "He has had a career that is impressive when it comes to injury and dealing with injury. He's also very impressive for this stage of his career. He's taken care of himself. He has the work ethic that is very much in place." Jones went on to say, "When you look where he is, physically, he's inordinately healthy. If you still got that , he's still got that burst. He still has his quickness. Yet, he has the experience. I think it's a real value for the Dallas Cowboys, or we wouldn't be sitting here." Jerry Jones backed up those words by giving Owens a three year extension worth $27 million.
This whole report being released is a non-story. Why is the league office releasing this information anyways? You don't hear about anyone else being placed on the "resonable cause" program, and I guarantee there are plenty of players in the program. Instead, you get this "story" about how Owens will be tested even more for performance enhancing drugs! The man has never failed a test in 12 plus years. It's sad that many media personalitys will take this chance to take shots at Owens intergrity. Let me remind all of you again, the man has never tested positive for any banned substance in 12 plus years.
As everyone already knows, Terrell Owens makes headlines no matter what he does. Last week it was his latest contract, this week was a missed drug test. I'm sure there will be plenty written about Owens missing a drug test and those of you who will question his honesty. My only reply to those doubters is this, is it more likely that Owens has cheated the last 12 years and not been caught, or is it more likely that he has not fooled the NFL for 12 years and just made a mistake by missing a phone call? Either way, Owens will be scrutinized even more by the league and media. But thats just the way he likes it, in the spotlight.

It sounds like a procedural matter. He has never tested dirty. It is probably a good thing in a way, it will help him to stay clean. I am no TO fan, but it is a bit unfair for the league to release this information since there are no " bad" test results to report. They should be doing this on all the players..

I agree 50yearfan the league did not have to release this information given his history of non-positive tests. It is yet another attempt by the league to draw notoriety to it's "strong arm" tactics at the expense of a star athletes' reputation. Even when TO tries to steer clear of controversy it always seems to find him! I imagine this will generate untold pages of posts today in numerous threads, just because TO's name is involved!

I agree with 50yearfan, the league is being nothing but a bunch of overly jealous idiots, go and keep your eye on Bill and the Cheatriots GOODELL!!!!

I honestly believe he is clean. This is a simple mistake and not surprising considering that this is the same guy who forgot to file his free agency papers when with the 49ers which led to his being traded to the Ravens. Remember that debacle. That makes it easy to think this is just an oversight on TO's part and nothing more.
