After Cedric Benson's second arrest this season, he was dumped by the Bears today. This will not solve any long term problems, but it was a good move as they got rid of a guy with character problems.
Benson never really felt at home in Chicago after being picked #4 overall 4 years ago. He held out for a long time his rookie year over a contract dispute, and then had to back up the realiable Thomas Jones. He showed glimpses in the Bears Super Bowl year, enough to egg on Jerry Angelo to dump Jones and make Benson the starter.
Last year, Benson never showed the reliability to be a starter in this league. He was largely responsible for the Bears very disappointing season and horribly anemic offense. He was so ba, that he made the mediocre Adrian Peterson seem like a Pro Bowl level player.
Now, this offseason, instead of having a humbled attitude as he should have, he ran around getting arrested and not acting like a reponsible adult.
Now that he is off the Bears, they are opening up the next chapter in the team's future. They will rely on Matt Forte to live up to expectations, and I think he will. He was 2nd in the nation in rushing last year, and has all the characteristics of a solid every down back. To back him up, the Bears have the tiny but talented Garrett Wolfe, who I think the Bears should give more playing time this year, and the reliable but nothing special Adrain Peterson.
It had to be tough to give up such a high draft pick with such high expectations, but it was the right move by Jerry Angelo.
