I guess it's a good thing I was pessimistic about this week, huh? But before delving into the bloody details, a few other things first. The headlines. The Twins drafted Aaron Hicks, Carlos Gutierrez, and Shooter Hunt in the first round. An OF and two pitchers, respectively. Also in the headlines, it looks like it's goodbye to Juan Rincon. I guess the bullpen will somehow have to get along without his 6.11 ERA. Also, hey hey, Gardenhire has benched Mike Lamb and his .228 BA in favor of Matt Macri. God, do something. The last thing the Twins need is a 3B with a Punto-like .228 BA. Scott Baker made his return to the rotation this week, sending Boof Bonser to long relief, bullpen duties.
The week that was. The good. The defense only committed two errors leading to one un-earned run the whole week. Well, that's about it. Ok, well, up until they landed in Chicago, the bullpen pitched well, with a .93 WHIP, 11 K's, and 1 HR allowed in 15 IP. Even Bonser pitched in on Wednesday with a solid 2.2 IP, 1 hit and 4 K's in relief. Then they landed in Chicago. The series against the White Sox was so off the chart bad it is almost beyond belief. Outscored 33/10. That same bullpen, which pitched so well earlier in the week then proceeded to allow a WHIP of 1.76 and 5 HR's in 13 IP. The starters in the three games, Blackburn, Hernandez, and Slowey, posted game scores of 18, 20 and 11 respectively. Uh, those aren't good numbers. In fact, starting pitching-wise, the only bright spot in the week was Scott Baker Thursday throwing a serviceable 51. Otherwise, Hernandez, Slowey, and Glen Perkins threw games of 25, 44 and 26 respectively.
OK, the offense. The slugging percentage was a bearable .397 this week with 96 total bases.(and hey, Mauer hit two, count 'em, two homeruns). Batting average and on base percentages both stunk though, posting a .260 and .284. In all, scoring four runs a game isn't that bad. Giving up 7.28 runs a game is. But maybe the hitters are coming around.
Ok, again, Chicago fan, the White Sox kicked the Twins' butt this weekend. Nothing else to say. The week ahead. After finishing up the series in Chicago on Monday (I predict a loss) the Twins play six more games on the road at Cleveland and Milwaukee. Ok, let's tempt fate and say "Time to get healthy against two struggling teams." 5-2 for the week.
