Winning/Earning a Collegiate Football Scholarship is indeed a monumental task and takes years of hard work. With teams scouting players as early as Junior High School, the pressure to perform has increased immensely. Parents are incorporating conditioning, speed, flexibility, and strength coaches to improve their sons' chances of playing at the next level. Statistics show that less than 1% of High School football players actually receive a Division I scholarship. This pressure can be overwhelming for such young players and may be attributed to an increased use of anabolic steroids in our High School programs. Has this age of stardom and future (NFL) salaries corrupted what was once a game played for fun?

Very true, did you know that if you use steroids in high school in the state Louisiana, you have a less then 6% chance of getting tested? I know a good bit of people that use them and are in the top of there class while many coaches either turn a blind eye or don't know about it all together.

when you take that 1% into account realize how many high school students are actually playing football. I know that when I was in school it was pretty apparent who was going to play at the next level and who would be watching. Parents have been taking it too far for a very long time this is not a new idea it has only been brought to the forefront after this type of information is now readily available with the internet and ESPN's obvious top 100 and 150. It will only go as far as you are willing to take it

When I was getting ready to paly college ball, I was going to a speed coach, nutritionist, personal trainer, and hot yoga, at the sametime as playing ball. I think dealing with that was my choice, my parents were athletes themselves so they knew what it was going to take to EARN a scholarship. They let me figure it out. As for steroids they ar emuch more prevelent in D1 football that most would like to admit, but like LSU says the coaches turn a blind eye. Winning brings in exposure and exposure is followed by money, and that is the bottom lone.

The bottom line, what a batch... of cookies.

I agree 84. I played NAIA baseball and din't see any there. Granted the competition isn't what it is at the D1 level and chemical enhancement isn't something we used alot with the exception of BUD LIGHT! We played for the obvious reason..........chicks love the baseball team!

I played HS football in Florida in the late 90's. In my 4 years, I never saw or heard of a SINGLE player I knew getting tested for 'roids.

My best friend went to FSU (98-03), and he said it was rampant there. The coaches turned a blind eye to it, and they didn't test very often at all.

I am not so biased to think that it wasn't happening at UF, or at other major schools all over the country at the same time. I can only hope that they find a way to curb it before more players end up like Lyle Alzado.

Same here. I played in Jackson, MS at a 5A school and don't recall anyone on the team ever getting tested. We had some big guys on the team too. I can remember in particular our running back having muscles on top of muscles. We happened to attend school together from Elementary all the way through graduation and he was a skinny little guy. By the time we graduated he was about 5'10" 240lbs and got a scholarship to Alabama State. A few of the other guys on the team went to Jackson State, Alcorn, and Miss Valley State. I know they were all using. The only guy that I didn't expect of using was our QB that got a scholarship to Mississippi State as a flanker. It is all over HS sports these days, and I reall wonder sometimes if I would have tried them if i would have been presented the opportunity when I was 16-17 y/o and immature. I would hope to think I would have not. Thanks for the post.
