Former ESPN college football analyst, Bill Curry, has been named the new head coach for Georgia State University. They don't even have a team yet, as they'll begin their inaugural season in 2010. Coach Curry is 65 years old. He's coached at Alabama, Georgia Tech, and most recently, Kentucky. He also played in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers.

I "met" Coach Curry back in 1996. Readers of this blog know all too well parts of my journey. He was instrumental in whatever modicum of success I can lay claim to.

Back then, I wrote him a letter too. Asking him for advice on how to lead a successful life. I was as far away from "that" as many of my students think they are from their goals today. At that time he was still the head football coach at Kentucky. Many would say he wasn't the most successful college football coach ever to roam the sidelines. To me, he's one of The Game's Titans.

He sent me a copy of what he called his "Focus List" (I still have it, in a binder which contains many other letters I've accumulated over the years, much to the chagrin of my students who have to deal with me "getting in their faces" whenever they tell me that they "can't.") That list was more about character and integrity issues than football. It was what he used to guide his decision making while coaching and one which he shared with his players and staff. It helps guide me today.

I heard him being interviewed yesterday about his latest endeavor. He has nothing left to prove. His legacy is already cemented. Yet here he is, "jacked up" to get back on the field. It's "what he knows." With all he's accomplished in an already filled lifetime, he's not yet done. What's my excuse? What's yours? I'll answer for us: none.

I won't argue the merits of Bill Curry, college football coach. You said it better than I could: he's done MORE than enough. But, as to WHY he would involve himself with a start-up effort...there you have me.
At any rate, he'll do fine.

Perhaps Mr. Curry is at a point in his life where he seeks a new challenge or he wishes to give back to the sport he loves so much. Perhaps he wishes to do both. I for one comment anyone who is willing to go out on a limb and take on the numerous tasks that need to be handled with getting a new program off the ground. Coach Leavitt did it with USF. The Coach of Florida Int. Did it. His name escapes me now but, I thing Mr. Curry will do fine and wish him well.
