Last night Willie Randolph, manager of the New York Mets was fired at 3:30 a.m.  Randolph's job has been under speculation for the past few months but he was fired last night after the Mets 9-6 win over the LA Angels.  The Mets are 34-35 this season and they were early season favorites to win the NL Pennant.

Rick Peterson, the hitting coach and Tom Nieto the 1st base coach were also fired.  After coming to the Mets in '05 Randolph went 83-79 and the Mets finished in 3rd place in the NL East.  After this, Randolph went 97-65 and the Mets came within one win of going to the world series. The Mets also started last season strong but ended with a huge collapse and ended up missing the playoffs all-together.

The $138 million Mets had won two in a row when Randolph was dismissed.  Replacing Randolph will be Jerry Manuel, a Mets bench coach.  Manuel coached the White Sox from 1997-2003.  Manuel won manager of the year in 2000 when the Sox won 95 games.

Randolph, who was supposed to coach this year's all-star game may not get that chance anymore unless re-hired before the all-star game.
