Tim Sylvia, quite possibly the most boring fighter in MMA history. Yet he is a two time UFC heavyweight champion. He is fighting quite possibly the best MMA heavyweight in history. This has to have Randy Couture chomping at the bit simply because he dominated Sylvia on the way to his 3rd heavyweight championship just 9 short months ago. Now for me personally I hate watching Sylvia fight because he fights it seems like to not lose, instead of fighting to win.
He is content to stand there and jab someone to death for five rounds as opposed to mixing it up and going for broke, and really pushing the action. When put on the ground as he was when Frank Mir broke his arm and when Coture dismantled him he seems to be really out of his element.
Here is the thing though because of a couple of factors I think he has a real chance to beat Fedor in July. Sylvia has been in the ring with nothing but pretty tough opponents in his recent fights. Losing to Big Nog is nothing to hang your head over. He may just be the second best heavyweight out there in MMA. Losing to Couture while a little disappointing just because of the size difference isn't bad either. Beating up and coming Brandon Vera isn't that impressive to me because he was coming off of a year out of the ring do to issues with his agent and court and stuff like that. He desicioned Jeff Monson then he beat Arlovski twice in a row before that. So that is a string of high quality opponents that Sylvia has fought against win, lose, or draw. Meanwhile Fedor, it can be argued hasn't truely been tested since his fight with Mirko Cro Cop way back almost three years ago.
He has beaten Hong Man Choi. WHO? Matt Lindland a good middleweight. Mark Hunt a guy with a 5-3 record whose claim to faim is he won a split decision over Wanderlei Silva who he outweighed by 50 pounds, oh yeah he did win a desicion over Cro Cop also. Mark Coleman who hasn't beaten a
a quality opponent since 2003 unless you count Shogun Rua who is a light heavyweight. Before that he beats some clown named Wagner da Conceicao Martins? WHO again.
So with no real competition in three years combined with Sylvia fighting pretty stiff competition over that same period. The possibility is there for a monumental upset of The Last Emperor. Will it happen? We will have to see. I am not saying it will happen, but this is MMA and we did see last year Matt Serra beat GSP so anything is possible.
