Let the debate begin.

The Spurs finshed off the Cavs on Thursday to win their fourth NBA championship in the last nine years.

But where does San Antonio rank among the great teams in league history? Are the Spurs as good as Michael Jordan's Bulls teams of the '90s or the Celtics or Lakers of the '80s? And going back even further, how do they compare to the great Celtics teams of the '50s and '60s?

The Spurs made it look easy in these playoffs, which begs the question: When will their reign end?

Tony Parker is signed through 2011, Manu Ginobili through 2010, and Tim Duncan through 2008 (but can you really see him playing anywhere else?), so there could be more ticker-tape parades in San Antonio's future.

So let us know what you think of the Spurs' run. Should we be calling this a dynasty?

June 15, 2007  12:09 AM ET

I would say almost as much as a modern day dynasty can become (I would argue there is more parity, especially in the West, than there has been for many years). That said, if they win another one next year, and make it 5 in 10 years, and 2 in a row, I think there would be no way to say that it wouldn't be.

June 15, 2007  12:14 AM ET

A great team, most definitely. A dynasty? No, not in the same ballpark as the 90s Bulls or the 80's Cs and Lakers.

The Spurs simply have not dominated the league like the previous great teams. At least two of their championships came against much weaker Eastern conference opponents. If they can repeat next season, that's when the dynasty talk begins.

I am no Suns fan but you could argue that the Spurs lucked out because of the suspensions. That series was a coin toss and whoever came out would be the champ this season. You could make a good case about Suns having played a better series than the Spurs...just bad karma for the Suns. After the series, the Spurs played the Jazz and the Cavs...not exactly championship-caliber teams.

I am not taking anything away from the Spurs...but if we want to compare them to the previous teams, we really need to look at the competition and the overall strength/weakness of the Easter conference. Just my two cents.

June 15, 2007  12:14 AM ET

In a pure sense, yes. The Spurs win. They know how to win. They don't get rattled. They have so many great players. Ginobili coming off the bench? Heck, he'd be the star player in half the other teams in the league.

But the Spurs won't be considered a dynasty in the eyes of the mainstream media because they don't have appeal to the casual viewer. Their success is built around selfless team defense (although they have explosive offensive players like Parker and Ginobili).

But they are a joy to watch for the basketball purest.

June 15, 2007  12:14 AM ET

No, their dynasty will end in Phoenix next year. What a bunch of crooks. They litterally stole a championship from Phoenix. The suspensions were not neccesary. It changed the whole outcome in that series. I didn't watch more than 1 minute of the finals this year because of it.

This conclusion of the leagues 2007 season has ended in the supremecy of the spurs. They are a dominant force in the cornacopia of teams and will not lose in the next three years. This franchise has became one of the best beacuse the ability to win ball games just never stops.

June 15, 2007  12:17 AM ET

The Spurs didn't steal anything from the Suns, David Stern did.

I think that if you even have to debate whether or not a team is a dynasty, they aren't. A true dynasty should speak for itself.

June 15, 2007  12:18 AM ET

Yes, it should be considered a dynasty...this should have been their 6th...
a couple of years ago, if D. Fisher never made that lucky shot - that would have been another championship year. And last year, if Duncan was healthy and Ginobili didn't foul Dirk, that would have been another. Actually, this would be a three-peat ! Its okay...the Spurs will repeat next year ! You heard it here first !

June 15, 2007  12:22 AM ET

I grew up in Chicago. Now that was a dynasty. Had Jordon not left the game for those 2 years. They would have won 8 straight. Jordon would simply lace up his cape and bring it home. If you ask me, Phil Jackson is the dynasty. 9 rings. That's remarkable. I believe that Phoenix is one good trade away from titletown. Step aside pretenders(Spurs)

No! Whinety Whine Whine Whine Phoenix Whine Phoenix Whine Whine robbed Whine suspensions Whine Whinety Whine Whine!

In all seriousness, yes, this is a dynasty, if dynasty can be defined as any team that proves it can win again and again. The Spurs are a *team*, a concept completely lost on 99% of NBA fans who dig the "superstar" idea. I love to watch San Antonio play precisely because they play "boring" basketball, doing exactly what they need to do to win. If this is boring, then please, NBA, bore me to tears. Forget Kobe and his 50+ a game. Forget Nash and his "I'll do it all myself" stuff. Forget Arenas. Forget Carmela and Iverson. Forget all the "hey look at me!" poster boys, and focus on a real team. San Antonio Spurs. NBA Champions. Get used to it, especially in Phoenix.

Spurs are a modern day dynasty but not as good as the previous ones.LA BOS CHC. Martin Broduer MVP hockey really now he had a **** team!Brees MVP NFL would they win with out him? LeBron NBA MVP of reglar season. TD of NBA finals. My MVP for baseball is, right now A-Rod. Super bowl MVP co shared with two colts running backs. NHL finals MVP Andy McDonald. just my thoughts on MVPs

Another thought...i think THIS year's playoff hurts the dynasty argument for the Spurs more so than anything else. Anytime when someone brings up crowning them a dynasty, the following will be debated...

1. The Suns suspension. I agree with NCJ, David Stern messed up big time. No need to go into the whole debate again. Let's just say that series did not help Spurs' case

2. Cavs lucked out in their playoff match-ups. Everybody knew whoever drew Washington and Nets would end up in the conference final. Now, I give the Cavs/LBJ all the credits for beating the Pistons but Cavs is simply no match for the Spurs. This does not help Spurs' case.

When we talk about a dynasty, we are not just counting the rings. How a team dominates the league/opponent needs to be part of the discussion.

June 15, 2007  12:28 AM ET

Hey Jo

Exciting! Spurs. Ha! Ha! Huh! Apparently you never watched a suns game. They have the most electrifying offence in the game. Maybe you should tune in next year.

June 15, 2007  12:29 AM ET

The Spurs are a Dynasty. They won fair from the Suns. The Suns need to stop crying. Dan from Phoenix! Cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it! There only going to get better next season.

June 15, 2007  12:31 AM ET

I'd have to agree w/Jake O, although it's hard to get to the Big Dance regardless of parity, which is more common now then it's ever been. A back-to-back isn't beyond their reach, but what with parity & free agency the climb will be that much harder next year....and yet, that much sweeter should it occur.

As a lifelong SPURS fan whose had to endure a team (since their arrival in '73) who posted the highest season winning percentage (next to the Celtics) only to not get to the Big Dance (pre 1999) I just want to enjoy this Championship! Go SPURS Go!

Manu "Big Nose" Ginobolli --> hardest working man in the NBA
Malik Rose --> you're a close second!
Bowen --> you were robbed of your rightful throne as The Best Defensive Player on the Best Team, you played Iverson, Nash, Willams and LeBron to a virtual stand still...Camby would have been candy for them!!

Finally, a shout out to all those Cav "nut" fans who keep talking trash...Action Not Words!! We Are All Witnesses...To A Sweep!!

June 15, 2007  12:32 AM ET

Dynasty? YES! Wow them Suns sure did great this year, guess their view of the finals was the same as mine, WATCHING IT AGAIN FROM HOME! Say what you want, but the Spurs are the class act of pro sports, no ****, coach chokers, DUI friend killers.......and they are a TEAM.

June 15, 2007  12:34 AM ET

The spurs had a pretty easy road to and through the finals. True the east was no match for them. But I definately do not put them in the same class as M.J. & Co. They make me want to quit watching the game all together.

June 15, 2007  12:35 AM ET

Your not a dynasty unless you have the ability to sucessfully defend your title, as that is the true mark of greatness. The Bulls of the 90's did it an amazing four times. The Lakers of this decade did it twice. Heck even the Rockets teams of the mid 90's defended their title. San Antonio has had three chances to defend, and has fallen flat on their face both times. In 2000 they lost in the first round to the Suns, 04 to the Lakers, and last year to Dallas.

This season I think clearly PHX was the superior team, but just caught a bad break, as with the suspended players I think the Suns would have won game five and thus the series.

June 15, 2007  12:37 AM ET

Give LBJ a break as a Spurs fan even I'll admit Lebron is really good thats why the spurs were so afraid of him taking over the series. He always got double teamed. Even triple teamed. He will win a ring one day.

June 15, 2007  12:39 AM ET

Dynasty? Who cares. The Spurs are simply CHAMPIONS - they don't need to be labeled as a dynasty.

Dan - you're a joke! Get over it already.
