After watching Arthur Abraham knock Edison Miranda almost cold in under four rounds, the inevitable rumors began. Who would win in a late fall/early 2009 bout between Abraham and Kelly Pavlik? I wouldn't be surprised if many said Abraham after he picked Miranda apart. But there might be a little too much being read into that stoppage, impressive as it was.
Miranda dominated the first three rounds, landing body shots and leaving some swelling near Abraham's left eye. It was only a thunderous right hand followed by a left to the top of the head that sent Miranda down the first time. So he was already hurt when Abraham nearly knocked him off his feet the second time. Anyone who watches boxing knows that the knockdowns come a lot easier if the first one hurts you, and Miranda was hurt.
That said, Pavlik-Abraham would be an interesting fight, though Abraham has never tasted power like Pavlik has, even from Miranda, who broke his jaw in their first fight. He won't knock Pavlik out, and Kelly is the better boxer. Abraham's earmuff defense and punching in spurts won't work against a guy who regularly throws 100 punches a round. Abraham's only hope is to catch Pavlik walking into something like Miranda did last night. And remember, Miranda had never been down before Pavlik put him down three times in their fight.
Result: Pavlik by decision or late-round TKO
