After watching the mets lifeless 5-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners tonight, I thought to myself "What is holding the Mets back from signing Barry Bonds?" Of course it will result in hundreds of media members following Bonds around, but I think thats exactly what the Mets need. Before the firing of manager Willie Randolph, all of the Mets players were constantly asked for their opinion on the whole Randolph situation. When they fired Willie a week ago I thought that would be the end of those type of questions and that the players could just focus on playing the game. However, since the Mets completely botched the firing of Willie Randolph, (firing him at 3:14am on the east coast) they are being bothered about that whole debocal and their opinion on new coach Jerry Manuel. Bringing Bonds into the clubhouse will make everyone forget about who the manager of the mets is, and will shift the medias attention over to Bonds.
More importantly than taking the pressure of the guys in the clubhouse, Bonds can take the pressure off of struggling David Wright in the Mets lineup. With the news today that Moises Alou might be out for the season, the Mets are in need of a left fielder. Sorry all you Trot Nixon fans, he is washed up. Bonds can slide right into the #3 spot in the Mets batting order... either moving Beltran and Wright down a spot each in the lineup, or they could choose to bat Beltran 2nd and Wright 4th. Either way, Bonds will be on base over 40% of the time and add some power to the Mets lineup. At this stage of his career he is a liability defensively in left field, but the Mets have Endy Chavez who can replace Bonds out there late in games when we have the lead.
As of right now I can't see the Mets making a serious run at the World Series with this current team. The starting pitching is not good enough. Santana has not been the dominant ace we all expected him to be, and some people I know are even calling for Claudio Vargas to take over for Pedro Martinez in the starting rotation. The lineup has far too many weak hitters especially with Ryan Church out. I have little confidence in Endy Chavez, Trot Nixon, Brian Schneider, Carlos Delgado and to a degree Luis Castillo to come up with a big hit, or a hit for that matter.
1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Carlos Beltran CF
3. Barry Bonds LF
4. David Wright 3B
5. Ryan Church RF
6. Carlos Delgado 1B
7. Ramon Castro C
8. Luis Castillo 2B
That would be my New York Mets lineup after signing Bonds. Bye Bye Brian Schneider and Endy Chavez.

Bonds is not the answer. This team is old enough as it is. Do you really want to add another 40 plus year old man who struggles to play the field?

This was a good blog but I definitely do not agree with you. This team does need one more bat, but Bonds? Really.

bonds hits better than 85% of the league, from a baseball standpoint he would fit with any team.

Fine bring him back, but the guy's a DH anyway. Last thing I want to see is a 43 year old man in left field at Shea.

Well J. Hova we are used to having a 40+ year old outfielder (Alou) and we are currently have Trot Nixon out there. Yes, he is younger but Bonds would be 10 times more productive. Also, signing Bonds would not take away any prospects out of the Mets farm system like it would if they were to trade for an outfielder. And he is definitely better then any guy that would be on the market right now.

Good blog.
As a baseball fan, I want to see Bonds back.
Would I make the investment if I was the Mets? No.
But I am curious as hell to know if he can still produce...so i hope they sign him.
