First off I would like to say that I am pumped that the Dawgs are finally going to get their shot at glory. they are arguably the best team of this era not to win a national title and they are definitely due after a 28 year drought. Symbols:
(W) - most likely a win (L) - most likely a loss (?) - completely undecided
(~W) - leaning towards win (~L) - leaning towards loss
SCHEDULE AND BREAKDOWN:
(W) Aug. 30 - Georgia Southern - Most people will look at this and think that this is an automatic win for any Division I team and up until last year I may have been one of those people. But after seeing App. State beat up on Michigan last year, I would say that no team is safe. The reason why I wouldn't put it past GA Southern to put up a good fight is that they are an FCS preseason top 25 and I think that UGA may look over them a little. Nevertheless I'm going to give UGA a "W" by their season opener against the Golden Eagles.
(W) Sep. 6 - Central Michigan - Once again this game could be seen as an automatic win for the Bulldogs, however, in week two UGA is playing a Divsion I team that is a preseason favorite to win their conference. In the MAC this does not speak for much, so I'm going to give UGA another win in week two versus the Central Michigan Chipawas.
(W) Sep. 13 - @ South Carolina - So, week three we enter into conference play against a team that can easily be on UGA's "most hated" list. After last years embarassment Between the Hedges, I expect the Dawgs to go into this game hungry for some revenge. No matter what the rank though, the Gamecocks always give us a run for our money. I expect the Gamecocks to have just as good a defense as they had last year (they return 10 starters) but I think our offense is 3 times better than ours was at the beginning of 2007. Another reason in which I am going to give the Dawgs this game is that the Gamecocks running defense was 110th in the nation last year and Knowshon is going to take huge advantageof that if they don't get it straight. So watch out Gamecocks because the Dawgs are coming to take back their dignity.
(~W) Sep. 20 - @ Arizona State - UGA's 2nd road game of the season is also probably the hardest non-conference road game UGA has had in a while. The Sun Devils are most likely the 2nd toughest team in their conference and for good reason because they are returning a lot of talent, especially at quarterback. Hot weather may be a factor in Georgia's gameplay, but not too much. I expect both teams to play extremely hard in this game seeing as it will set the tempo for the rest of their seasons. Until I see both teams play a few games I am not going to be able to call it either way, but hopefully the Dawgs will be able to pull out a very convincing win against the Sun Devils.
(~W) Sep. 27 - Alabama - This game last year was a battle of wills but 2008 I think that Georgia will come into this game with a morale boosting win against Arizona State. Saban's #1 recruiting class is very impressive but I don't see any immediate impact from the incoming freshman which means to me that Alabama will be the same team from last year, offensive improvement aside. However, I do not see a Win or Loss at this point for UGA as is with most SEC games, it's hard to pick a winner until right before the game.
(?) Oct. 11 - Tennessee - Ok, so this is the halfway point of the season and both of these teams should be in sync and ready to pound the living daylights out of one another. Georgia will be ready to destroy the team that kept them out of the SEC Championship in 2007, while the Volunteers will be looking to extend their winning streak to 3 games. In order to win this game UGA will have to be able to stop a running game that is sure to be explosive while at the same time maneuver around a line and secondary that will be pretty strong. I am still not seeing a definite win or loss for this game but one thing that will help sway this game to a "W" will be what in my opinion should the BLACKOUT game for the season.
(W) Oct. 18 - Vanderbilt - Vandy is probably the most underrated team in the SEC. While they are not very consistent winners, they do have their moments, (UGA 2006...need i say more) and they will beat you if you are not on your game. Nevertheless, 2008 could end up even worse than their 5-7 record of 2007. Therefore, I believe that UGA will still remember the damage Vandy can do, and they will come to play, and they will win.
(?) Oct. 25 - @ LSU - This is without a doubt the hardest road game of the 2008 season. I don't care how good UGA is or how bad LSU is, I never want to play LSU in Baton Rouge which is one of the most intimidating teams and places to play in all of college football. While LSU does have a little rebuilding year, and the SEC west is not going to be as easy to capture this year, LSU's defense is what is going to carry them through this season. And in the SEC, when a team is carried by their defense, you better be scared. However, I believe that UGA can pull this one off just as much as LSU can, and until the clock has reached 0, this is anyone's game.
(~L) Nov. 1 - Florida - Alas, we have reached the pinnacle of Georgia's 2008 schedule. This game will most likely decide the winner of the SEC east and possibly the National Championship. Once Again, both UGA and Florida sem to be equally matched. Georgia which returns 7 offensive starters and 9 defensive starters, and Florida which returns 9 offensive starters and 7 defensive starters. Last year I believed that our win against the gators broke the curse against them but the more and more I think about it, Florida comes to play while we become mentally fried just thinking about playing them. Not to mention coming off an inevitably tough road game against LSU. This is the biggest game of UGA's season, and we have got to come to this game believing we can win or once again, we won't. This game is also my 2nd nominee for the 2008 BLACKOUT game.
(W) Nov. 8 - @ Kentucky - 2008 will definitely be a down season for the Wildcats, but once again this is a team that will take you down if you look over them. But with Georgia's new motto "One Game at a Time" I doubt that will happen, and that is why I am giving UGA a win against the Cats come November 8th.
(?) Nov. 15 - @ Auburn - After not being in Sanford Stasium for the 4th week straight, the Dawgs may be completely exhausted. Auburn will come into this game ready to end Georgia's 2 game winning streak, and to most likely seal the deal on a bid to the SEC Championship. But, after two very convincing wins in a row, the Dawgs know that they can take this team down and if all goes as planned Georgia should leave this game with no worse than a 10-1 record, with that loss being during this game (hopefully not this late in the season) or elsewhere.
(W) Nov. 29 - Georgia Tech - This game should end Georgia's regular season with a bang. Although Tech plays Georgia hard every year I can only see us extending our winning streak against the Jackets to 8. Tech of 2008 may be the worst Tech we've seen in a while. With only 8 starters returning I don't think that even a well-tuned option oriented offense can withstand the likes of an in-sync 2008 Georgia team.
Now I know it may be WAY too soon to even think about Post Season, but here's my predictions:
(?) 2008 SEC Championship Game VS. Auburn - The Auburn Tigers and the LSU Tigers are both very realistic teams to make it to this game and if Georgia beats Florida I believe they will have sealed the deal to coming to this game. Either way I think that the winner of the SEC east will be playing one the two tigers, but my pick is the Auburn Tigers. And I think that if Georgia makes it to this game, Georgia and Auburn both will play this game like it's their last, and this may be sticking my head out their, but the SEC Champion will also be playing for the National Championship.
(?) 2008 BCS National Championship Game: SEC Champion VS. Big 12 Champion - I don't think that USC will be good enough to make it here, I don't think that Ohio State will be given another chance, but I do think that pollsters are ready to see the 2 best teams from the 2 best conferences duke it out in the most proving National Championship of the BCS era. Yeah, so that's a little exagerrating but I've got to go with my gut feeling and if I have to pick the teams that are going to be in this, I'm going to pick: Florida or Georgia vs. Oklahoma or Missouri
