The Sound of Karma: Volume 28

17 days without a blog? Looks like chrono gotta do sum bow dis.

But as most of you know, I don't know a lot of current alternative music, so you'll probably wish the drought had continued.

1. "Paid in Full" - Sonata Arctica

Unia

This track from their newest album, Unia, features an effective piano sound and a memorable chorus. This is one of my favorites from the Kemi, Finland, natives, and it shouldn't be too extreme for most alt-rockers.

2. "Ride" - The Vines

Winning Days

Normally, I hate songs from car commercials. But this one... I only sorta hate.

3. "It's Not Enough" - The Who

Endless Wire

"What are you doing chrono? The Who are a '60s-'70s band! They shouldn't be in a blog about current music!" Calm down, hypothetical objector. This is from their new CD from 2006. This track has a pretty generic meaning, but it still works.

4. "No One Knows" - Queens of the Stone Age

Songs for the Deaf

You probably know this song. It was popular back in the day.

5. "As Torches Rise" - Turisas

Battle Metal

You guys like battle metal, right?

Good blog, all solid songs

I alllllmost bought Unia at one point, but at the last second I decided to get another album instead. I wish I had the cash to go out and grab it.

Do you have any other albums by them? If not, you should start with Ecliptica, Winterheart's Guild, or maybe Silence. Unia probably isn't their best.

Unia was a different style from the rest, though, so maybe you would like it best.

Never heard of Sonota Arctica before clicking on this blog. Very cool.

No one Knows- Beastly. Same with Vines song.

I really liked Caleb. It's definitely my favorite from Sonata. Then again, I only have 6 tracks by them, and I've only heard about 8-9 total. Is the rest of Unia Caleb-quality?

I haven't listened to all of Unia. "In Black and White," "Paid in Full," and "Caleb" are probably the best tracks. But most reviews say it was one of their worst albums, or (at least) that it took getting used to. Their earlier stuff was closer to true power metal (fast riffs and chords, guitar solos, etc.) while Unia was a little slower with more keyboards and a more emotional sound (that's the only way I can think of to put it), so that probably contributed to the poor reviews.

Sonata Arctica has always had slow ballads like "Replica," "Blinded No More," and "Shamandalie" (pronounced "Sham and a Lie"), but they always had the fast tracks too. Unia is subdued the whole way through. Again, I haven't listened to the whole thing, but that's the way it has seemed.

Here are 10 of my favorite songs by them, and my 3 favorites from Unia. Listen to them and then you might know whether you prefer the Unia Sonata Arctica or the Pre-Unia Sonata Arctica, because they're pretty different.

Pre-Unia (no order)

1. FullMoon (sometimes spelled "Full Moon" or "Fullmoon") from Ecliptica
2. Kingdom for a Heart from Ecliptica
3. Replica from Ecliptica
4. The Cage from Winterheart's Guild
5. Victoria's Secret (not about the underwear, by the way) from Winterheart's Guild
6. Weballergy (pronounced Web Allergy) from Silence
7. San Sebastian from Silence and Takatalvi (EP)
8. Blinded No More from Reckoning Night
9. Don't Say a Word from Reckoning Night
10. Shamandalie from Reckoning Night

Unia

1. Paid in Full
2. Caleb
3. In Black and White

Hah Unia is for me.

I love songs like FullMoon and Kingdom for a Heart, but I definitely have a hungrier taste for stuff like Caleb and Tallulah. If I ever get around to purchasing a Sonata Arctica (I hope I do), I think I'll go with Unia.
