When Novak Djokovic lost in the first round of Wimbledon yesterday, I was probably not alone when I assumed that there would be no more surprises for another 2 rounds. I was dead wrong. In what was supposed to be a day when no one would get upset, 2 of the biggest stars in Tennis went down. Maria Sharapova and James Blake.

James Blake losing was a complete and utter shock to me. First of all, it's who he lost to. Rainer Schuettler beat Blake after being down 2-1 after 3 sets. Schuettler came back to win the next two sets 6-4 and take the match. Schuettler is a nobody on tour. He hasn't won any tournaments in 2008 and has an ATP record of 6-13. He had an ATP ranking of 94 before this tournament, and that's definitely going to get a boost. Blake was the 9 seed in this tournament, but he completely blew this match. A top 10 player should be able to close out someone who hovers near 100th after they have gained a 2-1 set lead. Well, Blake wasn't able to finish off Schuettler, and loses in the 2nd round of Wimbledon 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Maria Sharapova was supposed to redeem herself at Wimbledon this year, and win her 2nd grand slam this year. That did not happen as she lost to a virtually unknown player in Alla Kudryavtseva in straight sets. Sharapova had very high expectations coming into this tournament, but she disappointed heavily by losing in the second round to a fellow Russian. She lost 6-2, 6-4 and goes home, searching for answers to this monumental loss.
P.S. As I write this Andy Roddick and Elena Dementieva are struggling.
