Soriano may return for All-Star game
After another X-ray Friday on Alfonso Soriano's injured left hand, the Cubs said doctors are ''very pleased'' with how quickly he's healing, and he's expected to return from the disabled list sooner than the original six-week prognosis. The Cubs' leadoff hitter has been cleared to start range-of-motion and strengthening work without a splint, the team said. (Read: No batting practice yet). Soriano, who said last week he wanted to start taking BP this week, might have an outside shot at returning in time for the All-Star game -- his other goal.
Soriano does have a history with injury with the Cubs in his two years that includes hurintg his hamstring last year and his wrist this year. He just keeps finding a way to get injured again and again. He is a very good player, finishing the year off at .300 last year and this year is around .300 and has double digit homers and is the lead outfielder in votes heading into the All-Star game. He is also an elusive 6 time member of the 30-30 club and one of four members in 40-40 club.
But is Soriano really worth the money to keep him in Chicago? He drew $128 million in 7 years on a great deal after making the 40-40 club with the Washington Nationals in the 2006 season. He has missed a lot of time in the two years so far, and has not really been worth the money yet. On the upside, he got 97 runs and 70 RBI's on 173 hits despite being injured for a while really did work out.
Is he worth it? I say yes, he is. Right now, he may be injured, but he is going to the All-Star game along with Fukudome and he is leading his team in home runs and slugging % as of June 28, 2008. They should really give him a chance. Even these numbers may be a little disappointing for the money and being the centerpeice of the lineup. But becuase of his injuries, he is slowing down. If you put in the games he missed, he would really be an MVP candidate for both seasons.
