I've had some time to reflect on my pleas to the Pheonix front office that they trade for Devin Harris of the New Jersey Nets. But now that I'm in on the Nets' plans to try to nab LeBron in '10, I'm feeling like they're probably not gonna want to part with a young improving guard like Harris who will probably just be hitting full stride by then.
So, I'm switching gears and targeting a new go-to guy for the Suns.......Baron Davis. Personally, I don't like Davis. I think he's more sound than substance. He's had one good playoffs and one good regular season. But, he's a point guard who can get to the rim and flat-out dominate games when healthy. It's a tailor-made scenario too. Observe:
Nellie & Baron didn't seem to get along late in the season. Good reason to move Baron.
Everything Bay Area seems to be about Monta Ellis. His game doesn't blend well with Baron's. Good reason to move Baron.
Nellie loves Steve Nash. He'd be a perfect fit for his run & gun style because, say what you want about Baron, he's better in the halfcourt than he is playing up and down & is not the distributor that Nash is. Good reason for the players to swap addresses.
I'm the biggest Steve Nash fan in the world. He represents everything that's good about the NBA. But let's be realistic. What do Suns' fans want? A championship! And they will not, I repeat, WILL NOT win a championship this year with this roster. A move MUST be made!
The reason the Suns need Davis is because they don't have a go-to guy for the clutch situations. Amare's great for the first 46 minutes of a game but not in the clutch because of his perpensity to turn the ball over & commit offensive fouls. Shaq's not an option either because of his free throw shooting. Every championship team in history has a had a clutch go-to guy. Steve Nash has got the shooting & the IQ to make a good decision but let's be honest, his ability as an offensive player is limited. He doesn't get whistles late in games & isn't good at getting his shot off in traffic. Answer to this dilemma? Baron Davis.
The drafting of Robin Lopez gives me hope that this move can happen. I lobbied for the Suns to pursue another post defender like DeSagana Diop but that answered that need with Lopez. Hopefully they'll do the same in this case as well.

They won't trade Steve Nash. He's the emotional rock of that team, he's the leader. If they traded Nash, none of the other players would feel secure in Phoenix for a LONG time. It would also kill the entire thing the Suns have been trying to do for 5 years. Maybe trade Diaw or somebody for Davis and put him at the other guard, but in no way does it make sense to trade the centerpiece of one of the top 6 teams in the league.

I have to disagree completely with that analysis. Has he actually watched Suns games?

Nash 16.9PPG .504FG% .470 3PT% .906FT%. 11.1 APG and 3 to 1 Assist to turnover ratio. Yeah, Nash seems like a real liability to me!?!
