Mats Sundin has had a storied career in professional hockey.  A key ingredient is the only thing missing which is of course his name on the Stanley Cup.  Sundin is in his twilight years and has probably two good years left, maybe.  It really depends who he plays for but I think everyone can see that it's probably now or never for a chance at the Cup.  Even though it's extremely hard to repeat as Cup champions, I believe Sundin's best shot is with Detroit.

I know many of you will disagree with me on this but that's how I see it.  If he came to Detroit he doesn't have to be "The Guy" like he had to be in Toronto.  He would probably be on the 2nd or 3rd line and could fit in real well with some of the Red Wings speedy wingers like Helm and Cleary.  He wouldn't be the captain of the team and could add some scoring punch down the middle.  He could literally fall through the cracks where the focus would not be on him.  Detroit has super stars and he is just another one.  Do you remember 2002?  Detroit made it work then and could make this work now.  I guess it will depend on Mats and how much money he will want.  Then again, does he want a Cup or more money?  That was a special team the Wings had in 2002.  Many players took pay cuts to get Hasek, Hull and Robatille so that they could have a chance to win a Stanley Cup.  Could it happen again?

Over-all, The Wings have some "extra money" that could be used to get Sundin.  To me, this is a no-brainer and he is still relatively close to Toronto if he has a home there.  It will be interesting to see where he goes.

One other note:  Detroit is full of swedes and I think he would feel right at home with those guys.......

I think that the Wings would take a pay cut to get him. Why not?? Great player and if he wants a Cup, he will for sure get it in Hockeytown. Great Blog man. GO WINGS!!

Sundin would fit in with the rest of the Swedish 'All-Stars' in Detroit. The Wings have the advantage in the fact that Sundin needs Detroit to get a Cup more than the Wings need Sundin to win it again. If Holland wants him, though, he'll make it happen and Illitch will back him up with insentive $$$$.

So much for Sundin coming to Detroit now. Who would have figured Hossa would be a Wing?
