I loved Prisco's top 50, but there were definite faults in it.  Even though he did a great job tackling the Brady v. Manning topic, some of his picks were, how do you say, questionable.  Here is my attempt at naming the top 50 players in the NFL.  With 1696 players on the active roster, cutting it down to 50 is tough, but here I go.

Prisco made his, and I made mine.  Read it at Naptown's Finest.

Cromartie all the way at 7 after ONE good season?

I HATE YOU WITH A BURNING PASSSION.

I have a new blog series along these lines coming out tomorrow for the SIFS.

Way to steal my thunder, muthafacker

You snooze, you lose, mofo.

Cromartie is WAY too high.

I'm sorry, but he was NOT the best CB in the NFL last year. Hell, he was a nickelback for several weeks. His INTs come from gambles, and he still has a lot to learn on the nuances of coverage.

Don't get me wrong, he ain't bad. But he should be in the 40s, if at all, on your list.

Yes,Cromartie is too high, that's for sure, and I know Carson had a bad year but I still think he belongs somewhere in the 40's.There are always gonna be faults to argue about.

You value skill too much. Is this top 50 players of top 50 skill position players?

Andrews at RG is far too low. He is one of the most dominant players in the game relative to position. Leonard Davis is right behind him at the same position, and doesn't even rank.

Same with Jason Witten- the man was a monster blocker and had stats better than most #2 receivers as a TIGHT END, and he doesn't even rank.

You also really missed on Aaron Kampman. He is arguably the best run stuffing defensive end in the NFL, and yet he has also managed to be a premier pass rusher, garnering 27.5 sacks the last twos seasons. That you have 7 ends ahead of him is, I'm sorry, a total outrage. He is step for step with any of those guys, maybe even more consistent, in pass rushing. And manhandles them all in run support (outside of possibly Seymour, though he is a 3-4 end, so...)

Overall, though, a very good list (though a bit too Colts favored...). Those points were just ones that nagged at me.

July 1, 2008  11:13 PM ET

*6 ends ahead of Kampman, not 7

I was going to say the same thing about Cromartie, but other people already said it. He shouldn't be in the top 15 let alone the top 10.

July 1, 2008  11:18 PM ET

Where is Ray Lewis... and Carson Palmer has to be somewhere in the top 50

July 1, 2008  11:53 PM ET

Cromartie isn't even the best CB in the NFL (I'd easily take Bailey and Samuel over him)

And where are Ray Lewis, Kellen Winslow, Carson Palmer, and Troy Polamalu on your list

My problems:
-Cromartie is FAR too high (maybe the 40s or 50s, if that)
-Jeff Saturday? 17?
-Asomugha should be lower
-Walter Jones should be at least 10 spots lower
-Hester should be lower...he's a game breaker, but does he score more than the average RB in a season? Nope.
-Chad Johnson should be a bit higher
-Lofa Tatupu should be higher than Ernie Sims
-Andre Johnson is too high

That's all I have time for.

To clear things up, I want to say that this is based off of what I think they will do next year, not what they have done.

"-Asomugha should be lower"

Asomugha has been the best cornerback in the NFL the last two seasons, bar none. Champ Bailey was slightly better two years ago, but Asomugha blew him away last year, as Bailey started slowly.

Hell, this is how good Asomugha was- Pro Football Outsiders, as part of their statistical breakdown of every aspect of the game, charts passes against each cornerback. Asomugha was so good last year, and was targeted so few times that HE DIDN'T EVEN SHOW UP IN THE RANKINGS! That's incredible... Since PFO started doing these a few years back, I don't think ANYONE has ever done that as a #1 corner... not Bailey, not Newman, not Mathis, not Samuel... no one as far as I know.
