Let me go on record to say that I have begun to hate the MLB all star weekend, from Chris Bermann's stupid home run calls, to the length of time it takes to go through the home run derby, and most of all the fact that it matters for home field advantage in the World Series. I am WELL AWARE that the MLB All Star game is a popularity contest more than anything  Which leads me to my point.  If the All Star game didn't matter I wouldn't care that the Red Sox and Yankee's are almost starting the entire AL team, but it DOES and there why I have a beef with this whole system. I'm going to focus my argument in the AL as it better serves my case, although the Cubs are getting dangerously close to having too many players on the team because of the jersey they wear and not what they are doing on the field.  Here are the following players triple crown numbers and their fan votes.  So MLB fans, do whats right and go to MLB.com and vote for the players that deserve to go not the ones that are wearing a specific jersey.

(1st base)   Average/ HR/ RBI-Fan Votes

Youkilis .308/13/50- 1.9 Million

Morneau .314/12/63-1.6 Million

 (2nd base)

Pedroia .303/8/37-1.6 Million

Kinsler .324/13/50-1.4 Million

(Catcher)

Mauer .323/3/34-1.6 Million

Varatek .220/7/26 1.4 Million

Originally my beef was with A-Rod and Jeter but after looking at their numbers both do deserve to go as no player has step up enough to knock them out of that position

A-Rod .316/16/44-2.5

Jeter .280/4/35-2.5

Honorable mentions;

Grady Sizemore 19 HR and 19 SB

Carlos Quentin .284/19/61

Milton Bradley .321/16/49

Vote at MLB.com for the players deserving to play in the game!

The all Star selections are NOT all abouot numbers and stats. If it were, we would not need to vote, we would simply let the computers send out the selections. The same can be said for the NFL NBA and NHL

It is STAR quality and not just based on current year performance ---- fans look to the past year or several years --and they choose the high profile stars. I am not sure this is a bad thing either. I mean the All Star event is ENTERTAINMENT and for that you need star power

Nice blog,it is a popularity contest a lot of the time, and though I like the Red Sox,I find it stupid that they lead in many position voting because of their appeal to the large nation of Red Sox fans.Same goes for the Yankees, but the thing is,it's what the FANS want.

The big difference between the MLB and the other sports all star games is that the MLB all star game decides homefield advantage for the world series. So it is not just about entertainment anymore, it is about the World Series.

SouthSide nice blog. You did forget to mention how David Ortiz is the starting DH even though he hasnt played a single game since May 31st and wont be playing in the all star game either.

the "this year it counts" crap is stupid. Its not fair to the teams that lead their divisions that the cellar dwellars must be represented on the team. I mean honestly why should the Rays or Cubs or Red Sox or whomever have to rely on a player from the Reds or Mariners in the 9th inning with the game on the line. Its a load of crap and something needs to be done, Either do away with the game counting. Or only allow players from teams in the top half of the standings to participate. The later is not the way to go about it so "hey baseball get your heads outta ur arse and decide who has homefield in the Series by best record" Cause I would hate to have the fate of my team resting in the arm or Bronson Arroyo or whoever just because the bad teams must have a representative

I love the fact that a Cubs fan is complaining about the way the All Star Game decides who will get home field in the World Series and how the whole thing hinges on undesrving players from the celler dweller teams. That these non deserving players can ruin it for the National League. The Chicago fans need to remember voting in Sammy Sosa a few years back, the worst outfielder to ever play the game. His last appearance in the All Star Game cost the National League home field advantage that year. Now you guys have voted in Soriono. He can hit, but as far as being an outfielder, he stinks. Hopefully he'll be a DH.

This is dead on STLCards#6. We were subjected to Sammy's horrible OF play for years, most of when the Cubs were awful and nowhere near the top of the league.
