Hey now everyone, the Tour de France is staring us right in our faces... the riders will be pushing off in less than twelve hours on the Atlantic coast of Brittany. This race should be one of the most wide-open and hotly-contested in history, I would think... that's been the recent trend as last year's favorites become this year's jilted non-starters yet again... first it was Landis in 2006, testing positive for testosterone over three times above the allowable limit... then Michael Rasmussen was pulled out of the race by his team after it was discovered that he had seemingly evaded doping controls in pre-race training -- and then lied about his whereabouts after missing his test... and now Astana, the beleaguered franchise bred and bled by Alexandre Vinokourov, fails to get its chance to reemerge in the new image of defending champion Alberto Contador...
How will this race turn out? Well, I've already posted my preview special here... and we are bearing down on the start in Brest, so there isn't really much time to cover much else before the race gets underway...
So I will quickly let you all know why I would love to have you along for the ride here...
I plan on bringing daily coverage of every stage of this race. Sometimes I might be posting a little late in the day, and you might or might not have already learned who won the day's stage. However, as my SIFS column A Non-Traditional Sports Fan in America attests, I can offer you a unique perspective on a race I have been following for some time, and I'd love to
have you along to read it as it unfolds. I'll be writing this regardless... perhaps we'll generate a quick recap book for the masses... take on old John Wilcockson from VeloNews... wouldn't THAT be a dream come true!
Or perhaps this will merely be a nascent effort at reporting an event as it happens, rather than playing in my usual histories... either way, if you've enjoyed anything I've written before I'd love to have you come along for the ride. Sign up to the group for updates and instant links to the daily updates about this race. Allez, allez, allez! It's time to tackle the greatest stage race in cycling... let's get this thing started!
Peace,
Bigalke

No need to feel embarassed... I'm here to help educate and enlighten. The peloton, Tracy, is the largest group of cyclists in a bike race. "Peloton" essentially translates to main group... and is the big pack of riders you see bunched together in the race...

It's called irony, Tracy, it's a literary device.
