The Chicago Rush have made the playoffs again. The whole city is in pandemonium. Cars are being pushed over as Rush fever has overtaken the city. Their football dynasty has reached the playoffs for the third year in a row, and hope to repeat their 2006 Arena Bowl Championship as the whole city tunes in to cheer on their favorite team. (I shudder and wake up, and realize it was all a dream. Not the part about the rush in the playoffs, but the part about people caring.) The Chicago Rush are probably Chicago's greatest dynasty. In its short time in the league, their the only team that has been consistently good for their whole history. Their 80-55 all time, with 1st place finishes 4 out of 8 years and a playoff appearance every year. But we in Chicago are paying no attention. In 2006, I, along with thousands of others, payed more attention to the last place cubs than the arena bowl winning Rush. I didnt even know they were in the championship. I only found out because it was a little footnote on the 10 o'clock news. I joined the moderately sized bandwagon, and was like "Go Bobby Sipio: Throw 7 tds!" (Sipio was a WR, in the likely case you didnt know that.) They won the Arena Bowl!!!!!!!!!!! After that magical season, my friend got seasons tix (I still dont know why.) I occasionally went to games with him, and I would be a little confused as to the actual game. Whats with the trampoline things on the field goal post? This is weird. And i thought i was witnessing history with a 55-45 score. "Wow! Is that a record?" I said, at which point several die-hards looked at me like i was some yuppie who'd never been to an arena game. It was a very eye-opening experience. A Defensive player of some sort, maybe a tackle, for the Rush was signing autographs for some reason before the game. Me and my friend (Thats how its said at all state arena, not my friend and i) were like "Wow, we could get his autograph." It was a matter of walking three steps out of our way and pulling out our programs. "On second thought, lets not." Honestly, its like getting Wendall Kim's autograph (Cubs former third base coach). Is it really worth it? I didnt care for arena football, up until February 4, 2007. The heavily-favored Bears were upset by the upstart Colts. Grossman tried his best to lead his team to victory, but his heroics were not enough as the Bears lost the super bowl. I was distraught. I refused to believe the obviously better bears lost to the happy go lucky colts, led by their inexperienced QB. I didnt watch a football game for months. But when the Rush mattered to me the least, they mattered the most. I realized they were the team to be rooting for, not the upper-class rich guys team, the bears. And i think Chicago should to. The Bears have shown nothing but inconsistency for years. The Rush offer a reliable team that wins often. Theres no tears in this team; no over-hyped players, no breakdowns, no Grossman. Just a bunch of NFL rejects who wanted to play. So should the playoff game be on while i am channel flipping, I'll be sure to tune into ESPN2 in order to check to score during the fourth quarter should it be convenient. And I encourage all of you to do the same.
