Random MMA thoughts

So rumor has it that Josh Koshek is thinking of dropping weight to challenge BJ Penn for the lightweight title. This would have to be the worst idea he could probably come up with for his career. He is in the unenviable position to be stuck between the three most dominant champs in MMA. He is kind of damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. At welterweight GSP has already beat him convincingly not that long ago. BJ Penn is arguably the most gifted fighter in MMA as lightweight should he drop weight to try and challenge. Then there is that huge roadblock named Andersen Silva at middleweight should he think about moving up to challenge for a belt. In my opinion he is one of the best wrestlers in MMA, but GSP clearly outwrestled him in their match so that has to really be eating at him. He needs to focus on his striking and take down defense because there is no way GSP should have out wrestled a guy who was a championship wrestler in college. The easiest of the three if there is any such thing with this three to me would clearly be GSP, but I wouldn't call him easy by any stretch of the imagination. Koshek may want to wait and see if Silva decides to move up to light heavy and stay there then move up himself and challenge for the belt. With the three champs around his weight now he has virtually no chance at being a champ. So I was really wrong about Forrest Griffen and Rampage Jackson's results. Not sure I agree witht he judging after seeing the fight and reading some other's opinions of the fight also. I am of the school of thought that the champ either has to be knocked out or just dominated in a desicion to lose the belt and neither of these things happened in that fight. Did Forrest have the perfect game plan for Rampage? Yes he did. Those leg kicks in the 2nd round really took a toll on Rampage. That is the only round though I though Forrest convincingly won. I think MMA really needs to rethink their judging system and stop using boxing guidelines and boxing judges to score their fights. The UFC and other promotions need to have judges specially trained to score MMA fights to help avoid any doubt in people's minds about fight's. Some I have talked to think there is a conspiracy in UFC to get Liddell the belt back without him having to fight Rampage since Lidell and Dana White are pretty tight with one another. To me those people sound like Mel Gibson's character on the movie Conspiracy Theory. However upon watching the fight I really started to notice that Rampage and Liddell have a very similar style when it comes to fighting. Griffen used a very similar gameplan as Jardine used to beat Liddel in their fight together. So I think Jardine may have given everyone else the gameplan to follow when it comes to beating Liddell and Jackson. Speaking of Silva now Dana White is saying that he will let him defend his middleweight title while still going after the Light Heavy title at the same time. I think this is a bad idea for Silva. Unless he really isn't putting on to much weight when he fights at light heavy. Adding and dropping weight multiple times a year like he wants to fight between those divisions will catch up to him sonner rather than later. Not to mention the fact that what compitition does he truely have at middleweight? Michael Bisping? No chance Silva would beat him like he stole something if they were to fight. Silva should just realize that if he wants to fight the best possible opponents to just jump up to light heavy and start trying to clean house. That division is stacked with possible fights for him. Rumor has it that Matt Lindland has found an little known law called the Muhammed Ali Act that may turn out to get Randy Coture out of his contract with UFC and could really shake up UFC if the courts rule in his favor on it. Seems the rule states that the same person can't manage and promote a fighter at the same time that it is illegal and that Dana White basically does both for all fighters. I guess it will all depend on how the courts view UFC compared to boxing. On one hand I would like to see Randy let out of his contract so he could fight Fedor, but on the other hand if Randy wins I think it will send the UFC down a road they don't want to go down with either having to restructure the contract of every fighter under contract with them or something off the wall like making it to wear the fighters actual managers negotiate the fights for the fighters which would mean UFC would probably turn into boxing where fighters start ducking other fighters. If it was me running things I would just send Randy packing and tell him if he ever wants to come back don't think he will be getting any better of a contract than what he currently has in place instead of this lawsuit crap that they have going on now. Yeah their heavyweight division is weak in the UFC but why hassle a guy that doesn't want to fight for you anymore. The UFC will quickly dump a fighter they don't want to fight for them anymore and the fighter has no say in it so why can't the fighter dump the UFC. Fedor would probably eat him alive anyway, but who knows I don't doubt Randy Coutore accomplishing anything he sets hims mind to.

Good blog, I dont know what Koshek should do. Like you said, he's screwed either way.

I think they did use MMA judging properly in the Jackson/Griffin fight.
In boxing, you normally have to knock-out or dominate the champ.
But in MMA, if it goes the distance and the fight is reasonably close, the aggressor is usually awarded the victory. And Griffin was the overall agressor. Close fight, yes. But Griffin deserved the win.

There's definitely some renewed talk about MMA moving to a completely different scoring system than the traditional 10-9 boxing format.

Koscheck is gonna have to get in line if he wants BJ's belt, because after Roger Huerta beats Kenny Florian on August 9th, he gets a shot at BJ's belt....which he will in fact take from BJ.
