I have already put together a list of things that I want to see added to the Madden franchise (http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/20835), so I figured I would take on the NCAA football franchise next. Again, this is just some ideas I have outside of the game play. Please add comments to let me know what you think, and what you would like to see.
-Give Total Control of the football Program- By this I mean that when you take over a team you get to run things your way. You can regulate what GPA is needed to stay on the team. You can decide to take away the name plates from the jerseys, or add them. You can add pride stickers. Even decide to have the entire team clean shaven with crew cuts if you want. Depending on how strict your program is then people may or may not want to go there. Also you can get "team unity" boosts in ratings if you have them say all shave their heads before a big game.
-Fix Ohio States helmets- It has bothered me for years, but they just can't get the OSU stickers right. Come on this team is a perennial powerhouse lets get them right.
-Add real coaches- I have already started to see this in NCAA basketball games. Why not add it to football? With the addition of real coaches I would like to see coaching changes. If you are in a Dynasty mode you should have to choose from schools with openings or schools that give you a good offer. This is something that 2K did somewhat right with their NCAA basketball franchise this past year, they even had a wrap up of coaching changes before the next season started.
- Game Manager- This is a feature that appeared on Madden a couple of years ago, and that is in MLB 2K7. It allows you to pick plays as the game is simulated. This way if it is too close you can jump in at any point, and if you start to make a run you can jump right back to the Manager mode. I think this is needed in NCAA so you don't have to finish a 77-0 game, and so you don't just simulate a game and lose to North Carolina Poly Tech Community College. Also they need to have a "simulate to the end" option. Again ending the suffering of a bad blow out.
-Coordinators- Madden has a coaching staff, a small one, but a coaching staff none the less. This should be added to the NCAA Franchise as well. You should have to hire coordinators to help run your team. This will tie in to my hiring and firing modes too because if you do well then your coordinators may go on to bigger and better things.
-Customization of the league- How many Throwdowns have you seen about the BCS vs. Playoffs? Why not give people the option to play it out how they see fit. You can even take this a step further and allow players to change conferences. I know the conference feature has been on the game before, but lets allow people to truly edit their conferences. If you are a Big Ten fan then add a team and have a conference championship. ND fans can add their team to whatever conference they see fit. This feature should be active through a dynasty as well. This way if you take a small program and build them up you can play with the big boys when you are ready.
-School budgets- Based on your success, and the popularity of a school you should be given a budget. With this you can choose to do whatever you see fit. Hire better coaches, upgrade your weight rooms, build a new practice field, expand your stadium, build a new stadium, or even donate the money to the school (which would add to the school's academic score). This will also give large schools a weapon in offering you a position. The can throw their large budget in your face.
-Custom Stadiums- I just mentioned something about this with the budgets. If you are building up a school from mediocrity to a powerhouse the 30,000 seat stadium may not fit in all of your fans. You should have the option to expand your stadium, or build a new one. They should also add to what you can put on the stadium, so they don't all end up looking the same.
-Custom and Throwback Uni's- This will just add to the fun of the game, and for Oregon fans... well you can have a chance of playing the game and holding down your lunch. Have Nike and Adidas throw in some designs they are considering, and give players a chance to do what they will.
-Game Breaks- I meant to put this in my Madden wish list, but what would be cool to see would be breaks of important games. You know just before a change of possession they show a clip of how your rival team is doing, or a RB breaking a record. It can give the feel that there are more games going on than just yours.
-The ESPN feel- NCAA football has the ESPN license and an ESPN crew, yet when you play a game it is broadcast on EA Sports? Come on, like I mentioned in my Madden wish list you can have some fun with this. Make it feel like you are watching the game on ESPN. Also take the feature from years past where you can have the game on local, regional, or national broadcast and make it in to the game being on ESPNU, ESPN2, ESPN, or ABC.
-True coaches' polls- If you are supposed to be a coach, then you should have a vote in the coaches poll right?
-Spring game- This was added last year to the XBOX and PS2 versions, I'd like to see it make it's way to the 360 and PS3
-Personality from the players- Players have goals when they sign to your program, why shouldn't they have goals when they are there. This way players will let you know if they aren't getting enough playing time, or if all they care about is getting to the NFL.
This is what I have for now, I have heard a few things that have actually been added to NCAA '08, which are trick plays, the superstar mode is back, and better animations on plays. I have also heard that the superstar mode will start out with you in High School during the state playoffs, and then depending on how you do you will get offers from schools. If that isn't true it should be.
One other note, I have always thought EA should add High School football to their line up. Think of the popularity of High School games in the country now. Games are even showing up on ESPN. I know you couldn't use real kids or real schools, but let every thing be custom. I think this is where 2K messed up, people would much rather play High School games than with old legends on fake teams. I know my "high school glory days" are far behind me, but I know numerous people would love to relive theirs.
As always, let me know what you think.
