Since the beginning of college football there have been debates about which conference is better. But in today's college football world conference seems to slowly be taking the higher status in a typical college football fan's priority list than a team.
10 years ago the typical college football fan's priorities were
But over the last ten years Conference has moved up over state and is getting close to moving over team.
Are we seeing the birth of sectionalism in college football? Because it seems that Big 10, SEC, and Pac 10 fans have a difficult time having a normal conversation without an all-out war exploding between the three. And the spark that ignites this war is always some idiot making a stupid anti-conference comment.
All of this leads you to ask the question, what can we do to end this debate once and for all? Several ideas have been proposed, some say a playoff in college football would help because then the power houses of each conference would be forced to play each other, I heard one suggest a Big Ten- SEC challenge, similar to the ACC-Big 10 challenge in college Basketball, but we all know that this wouldn't fly with the NCAA. So, what can we do to eliminate this conference power thing, simple.... Nothing.
There is no way to eliminate this feud between conferences. Why would you want to? It has added an extra dimension to the sport that has made it unique from all of the other sports. There is no debate in MLB for which is better, AL or NL, no matter how hard baseball tries to push a debate between fans with inter league play. It's this uniqueness that makes college football stand out from all the other sports and that's why I love it.
