Nomarfan presents: The modern rock top 100 (70-41)

Originally, I called this the Karma Police top 100. However, if you all don't mind, I have decided to shift my blog over to DPS, where it is much more likely to be viewed by more people. If anyone has a serioius problem with this, I'll be glad to delete the blog and re-post it in KP.

Here is where 100-71 can be viewed

And now, I present you with the next 30 songs on my list. Also, people have been telling me some of my blurbs about the song are contrived and filled with no information (actually, no one has told me this, but they are). So to save your time and mine, I will refrain from writing pointless crap about songs I don't feel like writing about. Like the first one.

70. Spoon- I Summon You

69. Damien Rice- The Blower's Daughter

Damien Rice is sort of like Iron & Wine, but with a stronger voice and less interesting vocals. The Blower's Daughter is a song written about Rice's fiance at the time, who happened to play bass in his band. In fact, his whole first album, O, was written about her. Unfortunately, they split up, and his whole second album, 9, was written about that. Yeah, he's obsessed.

68. Death Cab For Cutie- Soul Meets Body

67. Iron & Wine- Jezebel

66. The Kooks- Naive

This song is dedicated to Cardsox

65. Portugal the Man- AKA M80 The Wolf

Portugal The Man is sort of an easier to listen to Mars Volta. In a way. Kind of. By reading the lyrics of this song, it appears to tell the tale of a painter or some sort of man that is forced to paint. By someone. It may all be symbolism. Who knows.

64. The Red Hot Chili Peppers- Can't Stop

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been one of the most prolific bands of the last 20 years, releasing 9 albums since 1987 and many more live CD's and EP's. They have been one of the few bands able to adapt and transition from the funky late 80's to the more calm and generic 2000's. As witnessed by their last album, not necessarily a good thing, but hey, they're the one's making millions.

63. The Shins- A Comet Appears

62. Queens of the Stone Age- No One Knows

All I can say is this, no current band can make uality, riff driven songs, like Queens of the Stone Age can.

61. The Thermals- Returning to the Fold

60. Remy Zero- Fair

59. The White Stripes- Icky Thump

58. The Shins- Caring Is Creepy

The Shins are pretty much the poster child of indie music. Their relatively unnatractive, complete nerds, and they play good music. Never has an indie band gotten more attention (or sales) than the Shins have, and for good reason.

 57. The Smashing Pumpkins- Bullet With Butterfly Wings

56. U2- One

One may be one (hahahah) of the best written songs of all time, and would be much higher on this list if it didn't have such a bring and clunky tempo.

 55. Bruce Springsteen- Radio Nowhere

54. Wilco- California Stars

 Wilco = amazing

53. Bright Eyes- Easy/Lucky/Free

52. Nada Surf- See These Bones

51. Semisonic- Closing Time

If you can name another Semisonic song off the top of your head, well, I'd be impressed. Closing Time is a model example of a one hit wonder, but its just so damn catchy

50. Tha Matches- Wake The Sun

Wake The Sun is the quintessentialsong of redemption (besides maybe redemption song). Shawn Harris sings of how the world looks brighter, and everything is all bright and cheery, and other happy stuff like that. Why is everything so peachy in Harris's eyes? Well getting rid of a cocaine addiction may help.

49. Tokyo Police Club- Nature Of The Experiment

48. Pixies- Here Comes Your Man

47- Radiohead- Karma Police

The modern rock group is named after this song, so it must be good (or have a really cool title). Or both

46. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Otherside

45. R.E.M.- Man On The Moon

44. Beck- Devil's Haircut

43. The La's- There She Goes

42. Band Of Horses- No One's Gonna Love You

41. Albert Hammond Jr.-GfC

Ever heard of this song? Probably not. It's because its only been out since this tuesday. But still, its awesome. I promise.

Good blog... I love me some Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Thanks for making me feel like an old man Nomarfan. I have heard only 8 of these 30 songs. :(

that's what I'm here for.

Actually don't feel bad, a lot of these are relatively obscure.

Where do you find all of these...and how'd you get into it?

Music is such a matter of personal taste. Give me something bluesy, folksie, rockish, or blue grass. Dylan (Not Dark Yet), Cash (The Man Comes Around), John Lennon (Come Together), Niel Young (Powder Finger), Tom Waites (one of his "Cookie Monster on crack" songs) or Lucinda Williams (anything from Car Wheels).

Wow, I must be crazy. I actually like close to ten of those songs. Still can't stand Bright Eyes, though.

Good reading.
Nice break from the Classic Rock and Hip Hop lists that seem to dominate Fannation.
